Potentially good news for members of propriety clubs..

nice argument but I can't see any way the UK Tax man is going to agree to refund 21 years of VAT per club:eek: which then has to be paid back to each member, lovely thought but........

Best scenario is they agree going forward to a 50% VAT reduction which will still mean cheaper fees but only a small amount.

The money would go to the club not the member as far as I understand.

Its not just about reclaiming VAT going back to 1973, this could result in VAT dropping to 5% for golfers

Interested to read that

"Fred Cowgill, who will argue that a significant portion of a golf club membership fee, believed to be between 30 and 52 per cent, relates to the playing of sport, and it is that amount that should be VAT exempt."

I actually thought that 100% (well 80-90%) of what I paid to my golf club was for playing golf. I pay vat on the food and drinks anyway and can't think that sitting for an hour in the bar once a week after a 4 1/2 hour round accounts for 50% -70% of my membership fees.
