I would have thought that a first handicap of 13/14 is relatively unusual without some previous playing/handicap history. You don't have to be a forummer on here for very long to note that most first awards are in the 20s.
Dunno about that. I played for about 8 years casually without a handicap so about 10 years ago when I got my first one it was 14... I have then yo-yo'd around that area for that duration...
You don't have to play in comps to play good golf worthy of a mid-teens handicap, just playing with friends every week will help you improve.
