Pitching from the green?

I have learn't a new thing. Thx guys. You have a good point about hole designs. The next time i play the west course @ North Berwick and that stupid green, my wedge will be coming out, if i am on the wrong side.

Ah. The 16th! I'm 2 under par for that hole for the 3 rounds I've played there. :DAnd one putt was from the wrong plateau!

Not such a good record on 14 though :o

what if its ajoining greens ie 2 different holes the what happens if you want to chip from one to the other

Do you mean a double green? If so, it's only a wrong putting green if the committee have marked it with a boundary line (or stakes) between the two parts. If they haven't, you can chip from one to the other.

I did it once in club champs years ago on a right angled green (and because I had lost all faith in my putting). Hit it to 6 inches from about 40 feet which was better than any putt I had hit all day.

It nearly happened at the French open this weekend when one competitor had no putt as a fringe jutted into the green between his ball and the pin, the commentators all said he must chip as its impossible putt but they caveated it with the fact most pros are embarrassed to wedge off a green.
This guy putted and of course it stuck in the fringe, THEN he had to wedge it out, that probably cost him serious money so another reason pro's can and will do it.

poulter played the same shot last week end,i first saw this shot years ago at the open at ST ANDREWS and at the time it caused a fuss even had ALLIS coughing a piece of cake up,very common place now for the pros to chip on greens.

My husband did this a few months ago and I was horrified, esp as he clipped the green.
However he very carefully repaired it, and it was from a corner of the green where flag is never near. I checked the spot over the next week or so and it disappeared very quickly.
It's a very high risk shot and best left to really good golfers

Alex Noren, I remember it too.

I have done it before when on a stupid shaped green that meant I could not putt towards the hole and I would do it again. You can't stop people from using what club they like from places on the course. Or next it will be you can only use a driver from the tee as hitting long irons for safety can take divots, or you can only use a sand wedge in the bunker. If you are on the course then you can use whatever you want, but I think you do need to use some common sense also.

Showing off recently I holed out from 3 feet with my driver.

What I did not tell the group is that I had practiced that shot with a V-Easy all the week before :o

Chipped off the 16th at North Berwick a few times. Once an irate spectator angrily said 'that's not golf' and I quickly responded 'that's not a green'.
Same as those silly kidney shaped greens when an untrained greenkeeper cuts a hole which is unputtable from parts of the surface.

My grandfather used to chip over stymies quite often.

If i remember rightly Calcavecchia took a sand wedge in the Open, i think Troon, but poss one of the double greens at St Andrews
On being interviewed afterwards he said - "it was 70 yards - that's a sand wedge for me"

Big Phil did this at the Ryder Cup when played at the Belfry. On the 18th, his second ended on the front of the green, pin back centre and he lofted a 60 degree wedge all the way back....must have been 50 yards in the air, lovely divot.
