Pitching from the green?

If I remember correctly, Darren Clarke did this on his way to beating Tiger in the WGC event a million years ago.
Kidney shaped green and DC was on the wrong part to the flag. 2 inch rough to putt over or a simple chip over...

If you can do it - no problem.......

We have a large double green where you sometimes need to improvise to get the ball back towards the actual flag you are playing to. Played various types of shot there over the years including a shot with a lob wedge. It certainly makes you concentrate on picking it clean.

munro

wouldn't you say it's more irresponsible of the course designers that design these ridiculous greens in the first place? Golf is all about getting the ball into the hole in the fewest number of shots, if that involves a wedge on the green then so be it

Not sure that I'd be happy to lose a shot just because it doesn't suit someone's sensibilities!

I have chipped like this at least three times, the most recent being a few weeks ago when it simply wasn't possible to putt off the green and through the fringe to the hole as there was a sprinkler head on my line through the fringe. There was no rule that allowed me relief so....

I was extremely careful to take the ball cleanly (but some times a sliver just can't be avoided) and I'd have no problems with a "digger" taking a divot as long as he repaired it, but I suspect that anyone who is a "digger" is unlikely to take on that type of shot. (wild generalisation I know).

The Rules of Golf don't prescribe what club must be used to tee off (or to make any stroke) - use a putter if you want to ....so I'll continue to use what I want.

I have learn't a new thing. Thx guys. You have a good point about hole designs. The next time i play the west course @ North Berwick and that stupid green, my wedge will be coming out, if i am on the wrong side.

i very nearly attempted to do this at strabane one day. i was at the bottom of a 3 tier green with flag at the top. told my brother that i was thinking of using a wedge as i thought id get it closer than attempting to putt. thought about it some more. looked at the lovely unspoilt greens. had a look over my shoulder and seen a group behind us waiting and bottled it. took the putter and didnt make it up to the third tier.

should of chipped it, digger or not! lol
