recently i've been going down the range about 4 times a week and playing twice a week. however, i've started to get pain in my left elbow (right handed player).

is this a sign of over doing it? or should i take a pill and battle through. a friend said i should use the practice fairway bunker at the range as its impact free and also helps with contact. anyone had anything simular or know what to do?

i would say give it a weeks rest and see how it is.

If you just carry on you will likely make it worse which will force you to rest it for longer to make it better.

Welcome to my world.

I'm going to physio in 2 weeks to address my elbow problem, more tenderness than pain. A touch of tennis elbow and hopefully physio can help accelerate recovery. I'm using ice and compression and its going slowly.

The doctor got me to hold my left arm out straight with palm horizontal, and then to move each finger up one at a time whilst he held my arm. The middle fingers when moved up caused some discomfort in the elbow/forearm - classic in tennis elbow apparently.

Does it feel tender if you push anywhere near your elbow joint? Voltarol helps but if you see your GP you can get much stronger Diclofenac which is what I'm on. Helps reduce inflammation.

I am also suffering a bit at the moment with pain in my left elbow and wrist on impact.

Only hurts when hitting on range mats, not when hitting off grass so using it as a reason to spend more time on the pratice chipping/putting greens than banging away on the range.

Will probably be much better for my game as well as my arm anyway

If it's tennis elbow that you are suffering from, (does it hurt when you do something simple like pick up a cup of tea/coffee or just grip a club?) then I can recommend these....

I was suffering really badly with it last year, tried various things but after trying these for a couple of weeks they pain disappeared and it's been fine since.

Be very careful if it is tendonitis. Tennis elbow is as Smiffy says, when you can't pick your pint off the bar. Golfers elbow is on the inside. I had cronic tennis elbow, saw a specialist, and was advised apart from an operation or a very painful cortizone injection, the only cure was rest. Two years it took, but as i say it was cronic and i had it severely four or five times before over the years.

It is caused by repetitive action, which includes the twisting of the forearm and elbow normally when holding something ! I managed to get it from flicking out paint brushes to get them dry, pruning with hand secateurs, and digging out grouting from tiles with a screwdriver. Trouble is you don't realise you are damaging yourself at the time, only the following day.

If in doubt go to the doc, but hopefully it is just a bit of elbow ache from hitting to many golf balls. ;)

thanks for the reply guy's. it only hurts when i stop hitting balls and continues for a few hours after. durring that time if i lift anything heavy it does still hurt.

i wake up in the morning and its fine. only gets bad again when i hit some balls. it must be the impact on the mats because i dont get it when i hit my driver and 3 wood.

Ive had tennis elbow(in both arms :() for like 4 months now and my doctor has said 3 times that it will go away eventually. Not impressed and also hurts tremendously when i try and straighten either arm. Not good at all :(.

Mist mats aren't very thick and laid on top of concrete and so there is always going to be a jarring on impact on any shot from a pitched wedge to a 3 wood off the deck. I get a pain too although not too severely if I use a range too much and prefer the practice ground at my club and hit off (sodden) grass. Much more realistic in terms of ball striking and less damage to the body. The other factor to consider is that a lot of repetitive shots on a range mat will loosen the adhesive holding the head onto the shaft over time

this is one of the reasons why i went for a truestrike mat to cut down on impact when i practice

primarily for my shoulder

but
deffo rest it and some anti inflammatory

had tennis elbow for 2 years, injections, diclofenac, rest, amitryptiline and finally surgery, now its fine and according to the surgeon it was pretty bad. it got to that stage as I kept working through it and didnt seek medical advice or rest it early enough.

rest it and seek medical advice asap

Hi

Could well be either Tennis Elbow or Golfers Elbow - both are tendonitis, the difference is which side of the elbow they affect. I have more experience with the latter - details in my signature . Golfers Elbow affects the inside of the elbow, tennis elbow the outside.

Sadly there are many misconceptions about Golfers Elbow (and tennis elbow). People spends hundreds of pounds on braces, physios, painkillers etc and some even give up golf altogether.

The good news is that Golfers Elbow can be cured (if you don't have it, it can also be prevented). The cure (and prevention) are quite simple and the great news is you won't have to stop playing for long, if at all!

Good luck with the recovery!
