just looking at previous open venues and suprisingly there has only been 15 different venues in the last 150 years, surely with all the top quality venues around the uk there should be a wider choice of open courses, been doing some homework on kingsbarns for when i travel up there, wondering why its used for a venue in the alfred dunhill, (more than holds it own along side carnoustie and st andrews), but not considered as suitable for an open venue, any ideas why ????

because of other courses on the Open roster that are in the vicinity?

so there will be no new courses added to the open roster then ?, seems a shame that a course like kingbarns might never hold an open

who knows if others will in time be added to the roster but there is already St Andrews in the VICINITY, Carnoustie is not that far to the north, Muirfield to the south, and troon and turnberry over on the west coast

I imagine there are lots of things that decide whether a course is suitable. Access and spectator viewing, venue for the tented village, media centre, the course, practice range etc, etc. Just because a course is great doesn't make it an ideal venue. That said, there are courses that could and maybe should hold it and some on the rosta that perhaps need a rest. The problem is once a course drops off, how does it get back on. If you have too many in the rota then they don't get to hold it for years. Many many issues

would be good to see a few new venues, think birkdale, lytham etc are very similar to each other, the one that donald trump is building looks like it will be something special as its been designed as a ryder cup venue, so everything would be in place to hold an open

Absolutely Homer, Can't see any of the courses on the current roster wanting to take a break TBH, can't see any of the English clubs being happy at a 6th Scottish course being added. The roster and ratios are currently enshrined in black and white (saw it on a site somewhere but cant remember where exactly)

The solution is wonderfully simple, lick of paint at Portrush and get that back on the rota

Kingsbarns ain't good enough.

Simple.

I can see Trump getting the Open as its meant to be outstanding, plus Aberdeen has got the infrastructure and facilities.

don`t think kb`s has the infastructure to hold the open - access road `s not suitable etc and as craw says the course isn`t a true test to find the champion golfer ,it`s designed for pay `n` play -to get the punters round and make lots of cash ...it`s a good course and ok for a euro tour event but not an `open ` ..

what about england v scotland matches :D

It is a good fun track with some very tasty holes, however overall, it falls way short of a Turnberry, Muirfield, Carnoustie, Western Gailes, etc and slightly short of a Castle Stuart.

IMO £185 is a disgusting price to pay. Carnoustie is £135, or a combination ticket for the three courses is £160. The amazing Western Gailes, plus Glasgow Gailes, plus Dundonald Links is only £180 which represents excellent value.

My understanding of an Open Venue is that a course has to actually bid for the event.

The course has to have a proven record of holding major (I mean large and well supported) events, have all the necessary facilities etc.

It may be Kingsbarns and other courses of such note do not actually WANT to host an Open. With all the conditions of play imposed on members prior to the event and then thousands of spectators tramping accross the course it does ruin the course for the members for a while.

I know Walton Heath for instance decide to drop out of the European Tour and Ryder Cup venue rosta, simply because the members did not want it anymore.
