Open handicaps

My brother law took up golf last year and we were keen to play in a few opens this year (pairs) his handicap is
25 when looking thru golf empire and checking out where we could play most are maximum 24 does this mean
he couldnt play or is this just a case of this would be the maximum handicap given for the competition.We are not looking to win anything just see it as a great way to play some nice courses at greatly reduced rates

He could play but it would have to be ff 24. However, if they are over-subscribed you may find you don't get in because of his h'cap. Worth entering anyway though. Have fun

You would be very unlucky to be refused entry but your bro in law would have to play off 24.

cheers guys thought as much, should think as long as we declare his proper h/cap and they take our money should be ok, hopefully he will get a few medals in and get down so wont be problem

I'm not sure if it works the same in pairs but if you enter a singles open with a higher h'cap and they are oversubscribed, those with higher h'caps are dropped. May not happen but worth keeping in mind

I am looking into playing an open or 2 this year but there is a slight issue with the handicaps. Do you need to have an official CONGU handicap to enter or can you have one of these self regulated from one of these sites on the web. As I am relatively new to golf I don't have an official one yet.

As Pants says above, an official CONGU handicap will be required. I managed to get hold of one by joining a really cheap club (£30.00 membership) and paying to play in qualifiers. Not ideal, but it works

I looked at that at my local muni. I think membership was £50 though. I am looking at joining a club this year but have recently decided that I will be moving house (from Barnsley to Leeds) so am waiting till after that to find a club to join.
