Heres something I used to do when I went out on my own for a few holes in the evening, helps with ball striking immensely....

Its simply play 2 balls (mark them 1 and 2) and the first one you play like a medal round, normal swing, normal strategy etc etc
2nd ball can ONLY be played with 80% of your normal swing power concentrating on set up and a smooth swing but no more than 80% of normal power or it doesnt count.

whats the betting your no2 ball drive is pretty close to no1 ball drive for distance, and no2 ball second shots are more than likely to be on the green or closer to the pin than no1.

Try it next time you have a few holes on your own and post the results;)

I've done this before - well not quite with the same mind set, but using ball 1 as the "official" ball and ball two as a practice, and ball two is nearly always better.

That is my goal for this year - to minimise the shots I hit >80%

I've put a big focus on this in the last month by 'clubbing up' and swinging smoother

I joined a new course this year and I am in the process of submitting my cards for h'cap

So far I have submitted a +11 & +10.... happy with that as I finished last year at +14.5

Finding that at 80% swing I am better control of the club and therefore the ball.

I had a similar thing I used to do. I used to play 5 holes after work (5 goes back to 1st tee) with a ball being very aggressive, going for every pin and hitting each drive for max distance. Then I would play the same 5 again but looking to place off the tee and hit to the safe part of the green.

I usually scored a point or two better with the "safe" ball no matter which one I did first, usually because I found a bunker or drove OB with the aggressive ball. I then tried to play competitions as a compromise between the two, using course management to determine when to be aggressive and when to be safe.

Do you use the same club for each shot, or whereas you may have taken a 6 iron with ball 1, you club up and swing 80% with a 5 iron for ball 2?

changed my strategy of late. i usualy fade the ball in so i have decided that im only attacking pins on the right side of greens. if its on the left im putting it on the dancefloor and hopefully two putting and walking off with par!

If you fade the ball, wouldn't it make more sense to attack the pins on the left?

For example, pin on the left, take dead aim, if it goes straight great but if it fades you're middle of green.
Pin on right, play safe for middle of green, if it goes straight it's ok, if it fades you're near the flag.

If you attack a pin on the right and it fades too much you could be short sided.

when i say attack i mean let it fade in towards the flag. so i am aiming at middle of green for right sided pins in the knowledge that it will fade towards pin. flags on left i sometimes try to draw in but can go wrong.

Ah, I see now. I think we're both saying the same thing but in different ways. :)

Good question, to ensure an 80% strike I club down, but sometimes stick with the same club as a better strike usually flies as well as an off centre one.

BEWARE.
If you are caught practicing on some courses, it's the gallows for you
Check with the pro first

seriously?

On your own on a quiet course playing 1 extra ball, "it's the gallows for you", there are courses like this? do they have any members?
