Still on the hunt for a driver. Got a cheap bid in. Also bidding on an old 1 iron.

My irons will have to do. Ropey as he'll grips.

Putters sorted.

Got a three and 5 wood sorted.

Going to be some big holes dug with those blades. Lol

Everyone's bag taking shape?

Bag almost complete, ideally I'd like a 5 wood.

As it stands is shown below, I just had a bit of a moment though, noticed that the PW has a bent shaft close to the head, the club third from the left below.

In the close up are left to right:
HBS "Max Faulkner" Avenger 3 iron
Dunlop "Peter Thomson" sand wedge
Pyramid 47 Special putter (stamped with a previous owner's name, G Bowser)
Master Built 2 Wood with "Control-loc sole"

Going to take my old school bag out for a few holes later. Bag is pretty much finished unless there is a last minute addition but it doesn't look likely.

Driver Dunlop
Mizuno silver cup 3 & 5 woods
Slazenger 1 iron lol
Mizuno silver cup 5-sw
George Nicoll putter & china head putter (I have the room, I may aswel stick it in)

I have a driver, 2 wood and 4 wood plus 2 , 3,4 irons plus two 5 irons of different vintages. I am going to be missing 7 and 8 irons but given the difficulty of hitting any of the clubs, it won't really matter.

My 1 iron is comical. Impossible to hit.

What is it with old irons and their ridiculously flat lie angles?

I am not as long with this driver but much more accurate. rarely in trouble. my current 3 wood may get binned if this wooden driver continues to behave itself. its a real fairway finder. lovely twack of it. Lol

There's a charity shop near me that has a bin with clubs at £1 each, I could look for a 7, 8, 9 iron for you if you like?
Might mean even more of a mixed bag though!

I meant to go out for a knock with my set this weekend but forgot all about it, I even went out this afternoon for a quick 9 holes which would have been ideal, doh!

Last time I used a wooden driver I couldn't get it off the ground. I had to get out and work on my technique to make sure I could get it airborne. Lol

My irons also go nowhere. God they are short. I hope the wind stays away.

Thanks for that.
If you see a 7, 8 and sand wedge I will take them. I have a 9. My bag is very mixed anyway so a few others won't make any difference. Even just one of the 7 or 8 would be great. A two club gap could be a problem !!!

Got all three, 7 iron and sand wedge are "Elite Pro", 8 iron is a "Courtier, styled by P J Priestly".
The 8 iron has an "interesting" grip. :)

I've been unable to source a 5 wood but have got a 3 wood, which leaves a bit of a gap in my set.
I doubt I'll be able to hit any of the longer irons so that's a gap of 3 wood to 8 iron, or in yards, 170 to 115.

A bit of time in the garage with the Black & Decker Work-Mate and I've made a fair go at straightening the shaft of the PW, certainly enough that it'll make no difference with my game.

Tomorrow’s the day!

A quick recap on costs, times, etc.

  • Cost £40 payable to Whittington heath on the day.
  • Meet at 12.30 for full English breakfast (included) apart from Dan who won’t be able to join us until around 1.00. I’ll be there for around 12.00 to get a bit of sneaky putting practice, my putter has got me terrified and I apologise in advance for the number of three and four putts I’ll undoubtedly make.
  • Format is a Stableford competition using our historic gear with ye olde 1 pint golf tankard for the winner.
  • Shortest drive contest on the 14th hole. Whoever hits the shortest drive (which of course can be in the rough as well as on the fairway) donates a fiver to this year's H4H fund. Competitors must nominate which club they will use before anybody tees off to ensure that the last person doesn't watch someone else knob there ball 50 yards into the rough and then bottle out with a 9 iron.

The weather forecast looks overcast and cold, but dry!

Look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Buzzing for this. Can't believe the sun won't be out after the last couple of nice days.

At least the course should be nice and dry.

See you tomorrow chaps.

And an excellent day was had by all.

Many thanks to Crow for organising the event . Congratulations to garyinderry for winning and thanks to Crow, garyinderry and Dan2844 for their excellent company today.

There were some very average shots but some really superb ones too. I will stick to my big headed driver but my old 4 wood could easily stay in the bag. Modern technology certainly helps. Even so, I would give it another go.
