I'm feeling really jealous of you guys. I love old golf gear and would be interested if anyone fancied doing a southern version. Was thinking of venues and looking for old courses in the area (rather than oldest clubs) and noticed that Maidenhead, which despite it's proximity, I've never played, appears to be essentially the same layout as when founded in 1896. Only £35 a head for a 3/4 ball April to Oct. Any takers?

PS Mrs MN thinks this is just an excuse for me to buy more golf clubs.

Love the look of these:

Maybe too nice to hit, would be heart breaking to put a stone chip or skymark on those. Lovely display piece though.

Those clubs are things of beauty, buy them Mashie, you know you have to, your wife will understand when she sees them.

I might be tempted down to Maidenhead depending on the date and how I'm using up my holidays.

Fourball booked for a 1.30 tee off.

Full English breakfast booked for 12.30, which should give us time to savour the breakfast, compare our equipment :)ooo:) and have a few putts.

Hopefully we'll get some glorious weather to complement the occasion.

I'm currently searching ebay for a piece of historic golfing tat to award to the winner and I propose that we have a "shortest drive" contest on the 14th hole. Whoever hits the shortest drive (which of course can be in the rough as well as on the fairway) donates a fiver to this year's H4H fund. :D

Just noticed I didn't confirm the date on my post above!

Full English breakfast booked for 12.30 and booked for 1.30 tee off, Friday March 18th.

Can you please all confirm that you're okay for this?

Thanks.

I gave up playing in 1990 and only started again in 2013. Until last year I had in my loft a full set of 35 year old Wilson Tour Blade irons (tiny heads with no back, God knows how I ever hit them), a McGregor Tourney Persimmon driver, a Wilson Andy Bean 5 wood and my 40 year old Ping Anser (original design) which I am still using in my second golfing life.

I was never going to use the irons again so, with the exception of the 2 iron, I threw them away. Still got the driver and 5 wood, recently regripped, as I am going to have a go with them some time this year.

Whittington is a cracking course, played it last year. Shame I didn't see the thread earlier, although I couldn't make 18th March as it is Gold Cup day.

Hope you all enjoy it, I'm sure you will.

The ebay search for a prize has ended, any Old School golfer should be proud to display the below on their mantlepiece. :)

Best Stableford on the day wins it.

Good find Dan, and a bonus iron! "Spade Blade" a club for getting you out of a hole if ever there was one.

Don't worry too much about the putter, if you find something great but if not as long as it's a good few years old then it'll be fine!

Well, I went to the range today and besides normal practice, I hit my driver and 5 iron that I will be using in the challenge. Bear in mind that the 5 iron is too short and too flat a lie angle for me - I ended hitting most shots right with it and a lot shorter as a consequence. The driver went remarkably straight. I will give them another go next week. This is going to be hilarious!!

A friend of mine has offered me a hickory shafted putter that is a bit bowed too.

Use it! Or at least bring it along for a practice on the putting green. :)

Mine is straight but I've discovered that the head is slightly loose and I'm sure that the old leather wrapped grip also has a tendency to move around a bit.

I agree that it's going to be hilarious.

The shortest drive hole will be a real test of nerves, and I think we should all have to nominate which club we use before anybody tees off to ensure that the last person doesn't watch someone else knob there ball 50 yards into the rough and then bottle out with a 9 iron.
(in case anybody missed the post; "shortest drive" contest to be held on the 14th hole. Whoever hits the shortest drive, which of course can be in the rough as well as on the fairway, donates a fiver to this year's H4H fund.)
