But not, maybe, in the usual way

I am currently off 11.4 with a final qualifying competition on Sunday. A good round and I play for the next 5 months off 11, a bad round I will play off 12. The dilemma .... do I scrtach on Sunday to be sure of not going up?

Be true to yourself, I was 7.4 when I played in the final qualifier of my year 36 hole Club Champs, went round in net par first round and dropped a couple too many on the back nine of the second round to get 01 back pushing me up to 8 (7.5) I might still get an end of year cut as I had quite a few good rounds with 50% of all games I played being buffer or better. If you go up, its only one extra shot in the back nine, if you buffer or get cut...Woohoo!
Now if it was to go from single figures to 10...... :D

Have to agree with everyone else, Chris.

Play your round and what will be, will be.

I reckon you'll get cut! :)

Go out there and shoot the lights out IMO. If not, do your best. You can hold your head up high and regarless of what your HCP is through the winter - it will reflect your current standard of play.

I see so many (generally cat 1s) trying to protect their HCP through the winter by not entering comps (.1 avoidance). Dosnt make me mad but surprises me that they do this.

Do you play golf for the golf or for the h'cap?

You could scratch, and then play your first qualifier next year and go up anyway. Its a no-brainer. Get out there on Sunday and have some fun. The h'cap at the end of it will reflect your true game...

I totally agree, and certainly plan to play. Strangly I was in exactly the same situation one year ago to the day, same handicap and same competition and was feeling poorly on the day. I played and my handicap went to 12.

The downside is that if I go to 12, my 17 handicap winter league partner loses one of the shots that he gets from me if I am the lowest h/cap in our fourball match, although, I benefit as a result of the increase. He is capable of parring/ birdieing any hole on the course though and I would rather he has the extra shot.

Thats some 17 handicapper, being able to par/birdie every hole. Is he available for hire? I have a 4 ball comp comming up and could do with him! LOL.....

He played off 9 some years back but now only plays once a week and has real trouble chipping, so every round with a card in a medal ends up littered wit 7's, 8's and more - he did a 17 not too long back. On the other hand, he drives well and his iron play has quite a few flashes of brilliance in each round!

He's not available for hire by the way!

why not never play again and be 11 for ever???????????????

sorry, but ridiculous post from a real golfer!

Currently off 9.4, with one comp left this season. Could be the end of a single digit handicap. Still, at least I have done it once. May be that was it, the best i'll ever get.

Play, and what will be will be.

I can't believe this is even a real question. If you really believe you're good enough to play off 11 then you'd just go and play, it's only 0.1, you'll get it back next year.

If you have decided to play (which of course you should as golf is fun) then forget all about your handicap worries and just go out and play. If you are thinking or worrying about dropping that .1 you probably will. Not thinking about it won't guarantee you won't but it will increase your chances.

I think you shouldn't worry about how it'll affect your partner and focus on doing whats right for your game. So what if you go up a shot over the winter. My partner is going down and getting into nosebleed territory so any hopes we had of a long run in the winter knockout are going south. Only kidding partner. I'll always play every comp I can and if I get 0.1 back cest la vie. If I get a cut then their must be a rare planetary alignment somewhere. In between I'll try my heart and soul out for 18 holes and have some fun doing it
