Nowhere to practice your short game holding you back?

You'll just have to go back to Uni John.

Out at Peffermill sports ground ;) Plenty of wedge abuse potential there I'd have thought.

I might look in to that one at Prestonfield, Strangely. I played there recently and it's nice course that suits my eye.

Let me know if you fancy playing it again, I'd be happy to sign you on :) *

What really annoys me is that my old club, Kings Acre advertise this on their website;-

Short Game Area
The short game is one of the most important aspects of golf. That's why we've created a first-class short game area where players of every standard can hone their skills and technique.
Widely used and highly regarded, our short game area is reputedly the best of its kind in Scotland.
It covers around 6 acres and allows large groups to work on their game in a safe and comfortable environment. There are two USGA specification target greens surrounded by numerous bunkers, which means you have every possible opportunity to test out and develop your short game. Play better golf by improving your 'scoring zone'.

Unfortunately, what they omit to tell you is that you can't use it!!! It's exclusively used by the Pros for lessons. It really is top notch too but even members aren't allowed on it. WTF?

That's not only terribly frustrating, it's borderline false advertising.

what about just going down the local park with a bucket and some balls, or an old umbrella?

I see guys doing that when im walking the dogs.

When I was younger I was lucky enough to have this practice area at my club, Nairn Dunbar, and, needless to say I'd spend many an hour chipping and pitching away.

That's my home club and I hate that short game area. Green is too small so the flag is never a distance on that you'd find on the course, hardly any sand in the bunkers and the green isn't prepared to a putting green standard so it's useless for doing up&down drills/games.

If, as happens most weekends, the shed is full of juniors I'll kill time in there waiting to get on the main range but that's about all the use it has for me. I've resorted to finding a quiet spot on the course and throwing a few balls down, much like Fairwaydodger above.

I do the same as fairway dodger. You'll find me chipping around greens on the main course late in the evenings. I let people through as they come.

Same heads out every evening.

We can chip onto our putting green and we do have a practice bunker but I'd love to have a proper short game area for shots up to around 50-60 yards. Nowhere locally has anything offering that without the need to be a member

We've got a decent bit for our short game and the green is always looked after, thing it measures 90 yards to the green with a few bunkers put in as well, or a wee trip to St Andrews to use there short game facility which is cracking , it costs £2 for a fair bit its never usually busy either.

I never ever practice but know that I should, the minutes from the latest council meeting at Lanark seem to indicate that are building a new short game area on the smaller practice area.

I really should make more use of the 9 hole par 3 course too but always just play the normal course.

At this time of year, it's going to be quite hard to find somewhere outside to practice, we have a decent short game area at our club but it's usually rubbish in winter.

There's an indoor practice facility in Glasgow, don't know if that what you're looking for or not, iv never been so don't know if it's any good

As some one who rarely practises I often put that down to lack of facilities.

Thornton is looking at developing their practise area which is currently just a rectangle field into a small course. I'm not one for just simply hitting balls so hopefully this encourages me into the practise area, could certainly do with the bunker practise!

We have a practice bunker but no green to play too. I've asked to get a green cut but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. No point to a bunker if you can't see the result.

No other clubs around seem to have practice facilities. I'm lucky the clubs has a small range area and now has some nets. Which is good for long game.

Thankfully we have a few options at my place, firstly the wee course it's a great mix of par 3's and 4's. It requires you to shape the ball both ways and is usually quiet during the week so you can spend as long as you want on each hole.

We have the short game area with greenside bunkers etc alongside the short range that is for irons only with two target greens at 150 &100y.

Finally we have the new range with 6 target greens, practice fairway bunkers and a grass area as well as covered bays, so pretty much no real excuse for my poor short game.

my club has fantastic practice facilities. Sadly, I'm very bad at practising. I have a tidy shirt game, but the more I practice, the worse it gets. I'm better off leaving it to the one off, full focus, do or die. I can't bring the same focus to practicing, however good the facilities are.

Is that because you're good with a iron? :whoo:
