Not so common courtesy.

Myself and Jan were hoping to play a nice course this week as her Lady captaincy is due to finish at the end of the month.
As you may know, Captains get courtesy during their term so was very disappointed to discover the club in question only gives courtesy to men captains and not lady captains.
Given the changes in law for sexual discrimination in sport with affect from 1st October, do you think they were right?
I appreciate it's up to the club concerned to pick and choose who gets courtesy, but can they refuse a captain because she isn't a man.
Your thoughts please :(

I cant believe that any club can be so neanderthal.

I wonder if they think that she is only the captain of the ladies section and not the Club as a whole. Ours club works like that at the moment but as from now we have to put in place a system that allows a lady to become the overall club captain if selected.

Cant understand why, if the above applies, that the ladies section at the host club cant give curtesy of the course anyway!

Interesting this one Bob. On one level it sounds very petty and poor on the club concerned but you could ask the question where do they draw the line - Lady Captain, Senior Captain, Junior Captain etc. As far as I'm aware the courtesy only extends to Club Captains and not "section captains" round this neck of the woods, but I'm not sure so would be interested to hear any other views on the policy.

I don't think the equality argument is valid though as the Captaincy of any club now has to be open to a transparent process open to both men and women. So I think it will be perfectly OK to say only THE captain gets courtesy. That in itself isn't discriminatory.

I personally think that men and lady captains should receive the same courtesy. Interesting to know if you had this problem before,or is this a one off ?

If you both come to my club i will get you on for nothing. You will need to squeeze through a hedge and start on the second though

I don't see much wrong with the rebuff on this one. There are certain clubs that will even refuse courtesy for THE captain.

**What is the captain anyway?? It's a ceremonial position (albeit an expensive one for them) and most, if not all, clubs would function without one.

**Tin hat is on already for any comebacks!! :D

Agreed, it would only be discriminatory if a male Club Captain was offered courtesy and a female Club Captain was not

Ref the OP I find it a little disappointing that the lady captain doesn't get courtesy of the course. Surely it should be men's and ladies captain and draw the line there.
Name and shame bob.

I can understand why at particularly popular courses they would restrict it to 'The' Club Captain but in this day and age with Club, Seniors, Ladies and Juniors captains is there such a thing anymore? Is he not simply Men's Captain now?

Tradition my boy, tradition. :D

Seriously, you are right. The Club Captain is a ceremonial position and in most clubs means very little apart from standing at the front at presentations and attending endless social events. (I'm saving hard for next year btw). It's hard to imagine a club without one though.... nearly as hard as imagining a club with a Lady as Captain. More tin hats required!!

As for OP then all clubs can do as they like I suppose but if most do afford visiting Lady Captains courtesy then those that don't just look bad. There again I've an idea of the type of clubs that will do this and they are their own worst enemy most of the time..... up themselves and full of their own importance. :D

I dont want to name the club as it's in the midlands and I might get jumped by the midland peasants on here :D
Will probably go to Worksop GC next week instead. Looks a much nicer course anyway. :)

I have been refused courtesy by another club in Norfolk because I wasn't from Norfolk but thats another story.

I guess I dont want to play a course that doesn'nt want me there.

Who was it said "I dont want to be a member of any club that would let me join"? :D

Should of married a man Bob.

Nah, got too much sense. Never married :D

WINNER!!!!!

Um ye, back to the point, thats just stupid, surly thats is exactly the sort of thing that the new rules were ment to sort out??

Wasn't it Groucho Marx?

Thats the right attitude Bob.

I am quite a traditionalist compared to some on here but this problem is quite stupid. The club captains are generally gregarious, well connected, extrovert people who will tell others of the wonderful clubs they played in their year in office and, lets be honest, there arn't too many clubs who are so rich that they are happy to alienate future business - proven by the fact that there are calls to name and shame. Also, the free round costs the club absolutely nothing (unless they would lose a tee time) stupid decision IMO

My club has the male and female captain on the same level and both receive the same perks (parking space). I think most clubs should be progressive enough to recognise both posts simultaneously but clearly some are more discriminating than others. Very poor show either way.

I agree with the point that certain clubs will even baulk at offering a courtesy to the male captain but to be honest I wouldn't (were I ever to be in such an esteemed position) want to play somewhere where I might be begrdugingly let on and certainly wouldn't be wanted
