Anyone else think that the result this year is a bit of a joke? (Don't get me started on other years, such as Al Gore!)

Maybe in some years time he will be a worthy winner, maybe he won't but awarding it now seems wrong to me.

Am I missing some great act of peace that he has carried out?

If only, he would have been a far more worthy recipient!

I can see it now; Nobel Peace Prize - awarded for services to GM forum

What exactly has he done so far other than become Americas first Black President? I'm not sure I can see his worthyness no matter how much I try to read between the lines, delve into his history or view his presidency :D No doubt Tony or his missus will be up for the next one. :D

The most ridiculous thing about it, is that it is because he called for a world without neclear weapons, despite the fact that he is now in a position to do something about it and hasn't.

well that's an easy one then. call all you like then blame China, N Korea, Israel for it not happening.

bit like trying to ban bows and arrows, you can't un-invent them

nominations closed for the prize after Obama had been in power for 11 days, so he was awarded it based on less than 2 weeks as president ! Utter joke

It was obvious prior to that he was going to be President, and had spoken clearly about his intentions for a shift in US foreign policy, including addressing the biggest threats to peace, and arguably had shifted thinking well ahead of his inauguration. Being Prez is not a pre-requisite for the prize, so why do you only count 11 days of office?

You need to stop watching Fox News.

and you need to check your facts before making assumptions about where I get my news. He was awarded the prize, alledgedly, for his diplomacy as president, so that kinda means it was for his 11 days work. As I said, utter joke. There are countless people who have dedicated their lives (and hey maybe even a full year), to making the world a more peacefull place. I'd say they are more deserving, based on what they've done, rather than on what somebody said they will do.

I fully intend to reach single figures and win the club champ next year, guess I should head off and pick the trophy up now then. Enjoy todays Guardian

I don't read the Guardian, but thank you for confirmation of your right wing knee jerk reaction, in line with the views evident in your previous post. Your views accord with Fox News nicely. You should watch. They use a lot of short words.

Obama was only inaugurated for 12 days, actually, prior to close of nominations on Feb 1st, but had won the election in November, so his intention and stated policy was in effect from that time, and it was obvious before then he was going to win. I am sure the Nobel Committee took that as his de facto Presidency.

So it's OK for you to make assumptions about my views, but if I make them about you then it's knee jerk. Nice hypocrisy there.

Clearly you believe that a politicians stated intentions prior to taking power are to be taken as a guarantee of future actions, I suggest you do some study of past manifestos, stated intentions etc and then compare them to actual actions, you might learn something.

I remarked on what is what the Nobel committee was presumably taking into consideration. I don't assume that intentions are a guarantee, but your argument in this direction is as spurious as the idea that he had only been involved for 11 days.

You retorted with the Guardian comment, which (a) is a well known response for the right, and (b) was wrong.

Knee jerk would be for me to hint at a racist undercurrent.

Don't deny your right wing nature. You have to be true to yourself, even if wrong.

Goodbye.

I think it will be par for the course that any U.S president will get the award as they tend to be the voice that is heard above all others. Anyone can call for peace and nuclear warhead cutbacks,Anyone can ask Israel and Palestine to come to the negotiation table. If he achieves lasting peace I say yeah give him the prize, he has earned it but has he got the clout to carry it out though. Once another U.S oilfield interest is threatened watch Obama send in the Gung Ho troops quick as you like to bomb the hell out of the civilian population as the U.S have done consistently in the past.

Clearly you're struggling with the facts, a quick re-read of the post should help.

You implied I watch Fox news, which following your logic, if such a thing exists, is "a well known response from the left". You can't make a baseless accusation about me and then get all prescious and aggresive when it's turned back on you.

I never mentioned anything about my political beliefs, so fail to understand how you can suggest that I'm denying them. It says more about the strength of your position that you're unable to accept a critical comment about the award of the prize to somebody who had actually achieved nothing at that point, without jumping to a conclusion about me, and rather pathetically bringing race into the discussion.

I suggest you come back when you're more capable of discussing the issue rather than waving banners.
