The good thing it’s not allowing it to be year round - clubs will need to only use them when needed and be taken off as soon as possible
They are allowing all them year round, just now clubs don’t need to ask for permission. Previously If they asked permission they would be told that they needed to review them as necessary and take them off as soon as the conditions improved enough. Now it is up to the diligence and competence of the Handicap Committee, not always a level playing field.

I think the way the weather is going it makes perfect sense.
But they will have to be careful about being Q comps and major board comps with PL
I know you can have them but there not expected in summer

I don’t think we will see too many clubs having or needing PL in those summer months - there maybe some extension into May or start early in September but I’ll be surprised if any have them June through to Aug

I’ll rephrase - they won’t be allowing a club to have PL 12 months of the year

It can be used at any time during the year outside the current October to April

But as they say

“Clubs must use the Model Local Rule appropriately and on areas of the course where it is required. They must also be moved as soon practicably possible.”

Which is the advice they would have been given anyway if they had asked for them in August this year for example.

We have a river that comes through our course and we're the flood plain for the local area. We've been flooding more regularly over recent years and it happened most recently last week.

Our pro asked the county if we could nudge preferred lies forward to last weekend for our medal final (ahead of planned course work this week). County seemed reluctant to do so, until the pro sent a picture of the course with the 17th hole entirely submerged last week. Finally got a thumbs up on the day before after much unnecessary back and forth.

Sensible move to leave this to the clubs.

The good thing for summer months will be the flexibility to put them in place for very short periods.

There’s been many a time we’ve seen European or PGA events hit by adverse weather and they put preferred lies on for that event.

Obviously not comparing Clubs to the Tour, but if they are holding a Comp and don’t wish to move or even cancel it, this gives the Club sn added option under their control.

The ball was picking up mud here in Ireland all summer long.

The courses didn't bake out at all. A brief dry spell in May was as good as it got.

I actually don’t see PL as cheating, it’s required because of course traffic and maintenance.. when was the last time a PGA event was played at a place where the wildlife ( or membership) had created baron patches of earth ( we don’t blame green keepers for too low cuts )

Message yesterday from the club about this and "recommending" the use of winter mats for social golf, but not for comps. Rollup today, so I'll see how many people bring their winter mats....I'll use it if allowed on the fairways.

Couple of questions if anyone knows..

What is to happen in Scotland, Wales, Ireland ?
What are the risks clubs need to be aware of now they have direct control over preferred lies ?

We have PL all year what’s more we have one club length.

We must be an exception to normal as this is in place for all Qualifying competitions.

Should just be preferred lies all year round for amateur golf anyway. Would solve the issue of having to play out of a divot, plus weather is trash all year round now anyway. We play for fun anyway so what's the harm?
