No 1 Swing Fundamental

Beer never expires
I know it said the one thing, but

If you have one of the laws without the other 4, it's not going to be pretty.
To play well you need

1. Speed
2. Hit the sweet spot.
3. Good angle of attack
4. Good swing path
5. Control the club face direction.

Ooh ooh, thats this thread crashed and burned

I suppose the OP is looking for the one thing above others that enables those things to happen.

Personally I'm not sure there is just one (no offence JustOne, I do believe you exist;))

I think the spine angle was Tom Watson's "secret" that he says he discovered in 1995 so not a bad call on that.

Set up is really important. What ever shenanigans may follow you rarely see see a good player with a bad set up.

If I had to offer a suggestion it would be along the lines of 5 - stay in control of your swing/club. Wild swings usually produce wild shots. I like to think of Luke Donald who just looks so in control of all aspects his swing.

Toms was actually to swing 'left' with his shoulders but we digress.

There isn't a #1 swing fundamental I believe, there are many and some are equally as important as others and some are more critical etc etc

its an interesting question with no one right or wrong answer

If we are talking purely about the swing itself and not hitting the ball then maintaining a steady head would be No1. How you achieve that would bring in No2, No3, No4 etc etc

All good points and I know all about tempo and rhythm and stuff but but one thing that I often think with many of the higher handicap ladies I play with is.....

Hit it like you mean it!!!!

I think it was ACTUALLY Tom Watson who said that he was always searching for the "Secret" in practice so there were probably nearly a hundred "Secrets" he found by the end of his career... but I digress further

Just had another look at the "Lessons of a Lifetime DVD". Yes indeed, he says he got fed up swinging out to the right and thought of Corey Pavin's practice swing with his shoulders going left. This in turn ensured he maintained his shoulder plane and spine angle on the down swing. Hard to explain but Tom does it very nicely using a long stick across his shoulders. He says the "spine angle should remain the same in the golf swing".

So both right. ;):)

So far there have been no correct answers in my view.

Something nearly every amateur does (me included) is lose any wrist hinge with the first move in the down swing. Start uncocking here, and all is lost. Maintain this angle (or increase it), all the way to the ball, and you have lag. From what I see from most golfers, they don't. If the first move from the top is with your hands, you will never hit it as hard, as far, and as straight as you could do.

Watch Sergio, and if your swing is not like this, you are doing it wrong.

Sorry sgc001, didn't see your post.

I don't agree, there are millions of amateurs who have lag, and having tons of it isn't a fundamental. Not flipping would be closer to a fundamental but still not up there at No1.

how do you do that?

Would you agree that at address you are bent forward at the waist? are you equally bent forward at the waist at the TOP of your swing?

I gave my fundamental, you give yours. If you cant understand what 'maintaining your spine angle' means then go split hairs somewhere else.

The fundamental for me is hitting the ball. Without this, even the best swing won't get you to the pin.

Dave - the home of witty banter

With respect that type of answer is like saying 'Getting out of bed in the morning otherwise you wont be at the golf course' Hitting the ball is not a swing fundimental as it's not part of making a swing.
