New clubs or no clubs for 2025?

I went to our pro just before xmas to say I wanted to upgrade my Ping i200s.
After a simulator session in the xmas holidays, and another last week, trying half a dozen brands/models he said this:

There's nothing I can sell you which will make you any better, or you'll be able to hit any better than the ones you've got. New clubs are a serious wedge... keep your money and spend it on a nice holiday or something instead. He wouldn't take any money for the two sessions either.

His attitude has however meant that every penny I spend on golf stuff for the foreseeable will be spent in his shop, and I won't be going online to save a few quid here or there.

👏 to a top local pro!!!!!

Great stuff, love the honest local pro! To be fair the Ping i200 only came out in 2017, so by my reckoning they are good as new haha. I just recently updated my Mizuno irons from 2005 with Callaway irons from 2011... updated my 2003 fairway/hybrids to Clevelands from 2011.. Use a putter from around 2001. But my wedges are from 2020 and 2024.

What a fantastic pro you’ve got 👏🏻

Buying new golf gear keeps the enjoyment of golf burning. Wheres the fun in playing with old weapons?

My biggest buzz from buying new golf stuff is keeping it away from the wife.

It's been a long time since I'd invested in golf equipment and unlike previous years where I've window shopped, I've got new clubs - driver Qi35 & Elyte irons.

Fitted for both, at different times; must say I enjoyed the iron fitting much more. Had the option of a 'better' player forged set for irons (which was a surprise) as they performed very well and felt lovely but ultimately I don't play or practice often enough to give up the forgiveness. Also got 'fitted' for a ball ~ little bit pointless as I can't ever see me ever been able to justify circa £4 a ball but will use the info to consider cheaper similar ones.

I have purchased the following ahead of the 2025 season.

Ping i530 Irons 6-Wedge
2 x S159 Wedges
Callaway Elyte Driver & 4 Wood

Only thing I haven't' changed is the putter and hybrid. However with the new bag set up I may have a gap in bag at the higher end as I used to use a 7w in the bag so might pop another hybrid or fairway wood in the bag.

Ave got an itch, thinking that a set of Ping G430 irons might get rid of it. My old clubs are GMax, from 2015. Hoping I can get a decent set/ price for a 5-PW, black dot reg shaft. Where to start is the thing. Not bought clubs for 10 years and I am not going to my pro.

Looking to go from my trusty M2 to a Cobra darkspeed and probably replaced my battered 3,4 and 5 hybrids.

Played the Dunlop Maxflite on Monday for the first time in 2025, hitting the driver well but not so good the 3 wood.

Today the driver was not quite so good but still satisfactory, the 3 wood was much better.

Updated the driver end of last year to a tsr1 from a Callaway Epic speed. Using the balance in my account and then did a quick investigation into zero torque putters and picked up an axis 1 for a very reasonable price. This has been successfully integrated into my bag and now I don’t or have not been persuaded that any thing needs to be updated or replaced. My 5 wood is a callaway rogue but it works and has a nice wear mark in the middle of the face.
Just sorting out the ball selection as the driver will dictate but the chrome tour x looks to be a hot favourite so far

Almost two months into the year with an empty watch list and nothing on the radar, even abandoned the 3i project as it wasn’t in the bag New Year’s Eve!

The force is strong 👹

We’ve got the ‘local’ Ping rep. visiting soon to do fittings for anyone looking at new Pings. Might have a slot booked for me for my planned new hybrid buy.

Almost 2 months into the year and, well, I may have changed a club or 2........ 😋 ;)
The Force is weak

Famous last words of course, but I'm not looking to replace anything at the moment. Driver and 3 wood were purchased near the end of last year, so they'll be in the bag for a while. My irons and hybrid are over two years old, but I wouldn't be looking at replacing them until they are over five years. The 50 & 54 are slightly less than two years in the bag, so same deal there really - won't be replaced until they're knocking on five years or more. The 60 is just for bunkers so pointless buying a new one of them. And the putter - has been in the bag one year and it's amazing, I'm putting better than I ever have in my life, so I want that to continue for a long, long time.

That only leaves one potential candidate for an upgrade - the 7 wood. I've now had it over four years, but it's one of those things where it's become an old trusty, I know I can hit it from all kind of different lies, plus it has the 'baffler' type rails on the bottom which I really like and I don't see them on any new models. So I would have a hard time finding a replacement for it I think.

So yeah, nothing planned, but this time last year I would have told I'd never put a 3 wood back in the bag whereas now it's one of my favourite clubs, so God knows. Things can change. 😄
I still have this thought in the back of my mind that I might be replacing 7 wood this year - but every time I threaten him with replacement, he steps up and performs again. He's going to be a stubborn one I think. Another factor is that the second hand market for 7 woods seems to be almost non-existent. As 7 woods have grown in popularity it seems they didn't make enough 7 woods back in the day for the current demand, so they're hard to come by - and I don't think I'll be investing in a brand new club at this stage. So the F9 stays for now..
