hi all,

Going to try again with this question after original post deleted :o Sorry again Mr Moderator

I am a high handicapper who is currently using Ben Hogan BH-5 regular shaft irons and fancy a change.

My thinking is to get a set of quality irons to take me (hopefully!) to the next stage

I am looking for a second hand set of irons in the £100 bracket.

Can anyone recommend any particular makes or models that may fall into this price range and would suit a high handicapper / improver.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Gary

Second hand and in decent nick the £100 barrier maybe your stumbling block however I'd suggest going to a local driving range and if they have a shop accepting trade ins, have a look and see what's there.

You should be looking at game improvement irons like Titleist Ap1, Ping G20, Taylor Made burners and various others.

Nothing beats going to a range and having a hit though.

Depending on what your swing is like I am looking at selling a set of Taylormade RAC LTII with RIfle 5.5 shafts fitted with Golf Pride Multicompound grips. Also included would be a 54 and 60 degree RAC wedges. Really nice clubs and an excellent set for improving golfers.

If I were you I'd ring round some of the pro shops in your area to see what they've got in. You might get a bargain, especially at this time of year with people using Christmas as an excuse to trade up.

This time last year I got a set of used Taylormade R7 Draw irons (4-PW) and a Taylormade RAC 56* wedge for £100 from the pro at my club. Absolute bargain and just what I needed.

Try the likes of Gumtree for clubs like Callaway BB or X18's, or Pings. Should be able to pick up some for good prices and then when you improve or get keener, you should be able to move them on for pretty much what you paid for them.

If you're a bit patient, I would imagine that £100 will be fine. Ebay in the new year will probably yield something suitable.

I picked up a set of cleveland cg7s about 18 months ago for not much over a ton, and these are a good set of irons for all but the best golfers. They rarely go for more than £120.

I also noticed at the time that the various generations of callaway x12/14/16/18 etc etc are common enough to come it at a good price and seem to be well regarded. They are a bit 'clunkier' looking than the cg7s to my eye, but again I'm sure all but single 'cappers would play well with them.

ping, titleist and mizuno all have clubs that would be just as good, but tend to hold their value better, which is not so good for you !

And (if you're anything like most people here) I wouldn't plan on keeping them for years and years. Something will catch your eye in a year or two and you'll be back to the keyboard....

No real need to change imo - as these are 'Game Improvement' along the lines of those mentioned.

However, I'd always recommend Mizuno MX19s or MX23s for this purpose. Budget might be just a bit tight for the 23s, but worth snipe-ing some auctions on Ebay - buyer's market next 2 months or so! MX17s are the earlier model; MX25 the later. 17s and 19s are cast; 23s, 25s forged.

For a nice cheap set of forged mizzies, I think that the comp-ez or mx20s are worth a look . I think they preceded the mx23s, and are both lovely clubs. There are no ezs on the bay at the mo, but there are a few sets of mx20s which will probably not go for much more than 100
