Our seniors played in a 3-ball Texas Scramble with a 10% of combined handicap allowance. My team thought we had done OK with a nett 68.6, but the winners (all mid handicappers) had a nett 61.2. They scored a gross 31 for the back nine, including an Eagle 3 at a par-5! I know you get three goes at each shot, but even so! :mmm:

That's not really that low

Wouldn't even get in the top ten in most scrambles where the winners normally have a net 50 something and a gross 13 under

56.8 won ours a couple of weeks ago.

61.8 might have made the top 10

68.6 closer to the bottom 10 (40 odd teams)
At our club 3-ball Texas Scrambles are normally won with a nett score somewhere in the mid 60's. My team had to nurse round a 26 handicapper who was not having a good day, so I was quite pleased with a gross 74. Minimum of 5 tee shots each, and he had to take his last 2 near the end of the round, so no pressure!

I was part of a team that shot gross 55 on a par 71 track. I guess its all about hitting one great shot out of the 4 and not 4 pretty good ones......

Having higher handicappers in the team that can hit the ball a long way also helps (although they could go anywhere).....

Was that a 4-ball or 3-ball Texas Scramble, as it does make quite a difference, and what was the handicap allowance?

Whilst a higher handicap may help in a 3 ball at 10% they rent a lot of help in a 4 at 5%.

Generally I would bet on a team of low handicaps on most courses.

Del,

We were a 4 ball but that was gross. The handicaps would amount to around 20. We also didn't restrict the number of tee shots chosen.

You're right as these things do make it allot easier.

Having to take 5 drives each will make the score higher unless you have a team of great drivers - we usually end of having the winning score in the low 60s, but we only have to get 4 drives in each.

I aim to have all the drives in somewhere between the 14th and 16th holes so that everyone is relaxed.

Which is why, at our club,in a scramble the combined h/cap should be 30+ (iirc). Lower than that and penalty shots are added to the final score.
Each team in our comp was made up as far as possible with a low handicapper, a mid handicapper and a high handicapper, and they were all seniors! It was also drawn so there were no self selecting teams of low handicap players. :)

I always find that Texas Scrambles are won by teams of mid-handicappers. As they are all decent enough at most aspects of the game and unlikely to struggle to get the required number of tee shots in play.
I've played in the past where you're still trying to get a high handicappers drives in coming to the last couple of holes (including having to use a topped tee shot of about 70 yards in length on the last). That day we had to use 3 drives each, I ended up using 9 of my drives, the others 3 each. Safe to say we didn't win.

We have a max of 8 to be taken off overall score. 4 ball scambles with 4 drives each to be taken, but if a team has a no show then a H/C of 14 is allowed for the no show and drives go up to 5 each.

High handicappers aren't much use in Texas scrambles. A 20 h/capper gets 2 shots on your team total handicap (10%) a 10 handicap gets 1 shot but is probably going to contribute many more iron shots, chips and putts than the 20 h/c

I once played a Saturday bounce game 4ball and we played scramble for a change. 15 birdies and 1 eagle for 17 under total :D
