Following on from me joining Wimbledon Common Golf Club last month, I duly put in 3 signed cards and was today awarded my first ever handicap! :-)

Fully expected a 28 but they have given me 26. Not sure what that will mean really, but I am looking forward to entering my first ever competition at the weekend on Sunday. It's a stableford too, so i dont mind entering that. Not sure i'm ready for a stroke play event yet.

So, Saturday at Twickenham for the rugby, followed by my first ever golf medal on Sunday. Happy Days!

Thanks :-)

Will do, i'll be on here Sunday afternoon with my scores... what constitutes a good score, around mid 30's?
36 means you are playing to your handicap, 2 points a hole.
Whatever you do enjoy yourself and even if you mess up the start because its a stableford you will have plenty of chances to recover ;)

My tip for playing Wimbledon Common (well most courses actually) is to play every holes as a par 5. What you make up on the short par 4's and some of the 3's you can afford to give back on holes like the 2n, 6th, 7th 14th and 18th. It isn't long as you know but its about keeping it in play. 3 wood or even long iron off most tees will be fine.

Just try to enjoy it and relax and not worry too much about the score. If it goes great then brilliant and if not then you've still had a game of golf. We'll have to fix a game up so I can relive some of my glory years when I really could play this game

Not sure i'm ready for a stroke play event yet.

Not sure if you know but for handicap purposes in a strokeplay event your handicap is still calculated the same as a stableford. So the worst you can score on any hole will be a net double bogey!

Sweeeet, good job on the handicap, dont out any pressure on yourself for the comp, just enjoy it.

Good luck for Sunday. The most important thing is just to enjoy it and have fun. I am sure you will do ok. In fact you have inspired me to make sure I get my Handicap sorted out in the next couple of weeks as I have just joined a new club.

Stableford is fun, but Medals are a real golf challenge. When I'm having a bash with friends it's always stableford scoring but medals will help improve your concentration and in turn improve your scoring. Even when I'm playing for points I still think like I'm in a medal (unless I've got a putt for a point: attack the hole Imurg taught me that!)

My biggest regret in golf is that I shied away from playing on the full coursse and entering competitions for far too long!

Have fun in the comp and let us know how you get on. :D

Good luck for sunday. Dont let the nerves get the better of you. As most of the guys on here have said, the first thing to do is enjoy it. Dont rush, take your time, hopefully your partners will know its your first comp (tell them) and they should help you round.

One thing I would say, the rules in golf are many, if there is anything you are not sure about ask the guys you are playing with BEFORE you take your shot.

How long did it take from handing in your cards to you getting your handicap? I'm joining a course 1st March and am hoping to get a handicap in by end of march!

I got mine in about a month. I went out with the last group in some competitions, actually i think one week there was a player short (still on his way to the course) and they said as i was waiting that i could go out with a early group.

I can remember being very nervous especially the first week when one of the guys played off a 6 h/c. I would like to say that he helped me round but trufully he was/is a pain.
I have since found out that nobody likes to play with him and some people actually refuse. But generally the rest of the guys have been great.

easy, three cards signed by a member. if you don't know any have a word with the handicap secretary or in the proshop, there are usually people prepared to take you round.
