Just about to go play a new course. So I've set myself some targets for todays round.

Go round in less than 115
Hit at least 5 nice drives.
Nothing more than a 3 putt.
At least 2 pars.
No bunkers or water hazards.
3 Balls maximum lost.

Hope to achive most of them, even if I dont, I'll achieve my main aim of enjoying the round.

Sounds way too much pressure! I would just stick the the last statement... Enjoy it whatever happens! I am not a member of a club and the amount of golf I play means setting targets is pretty pointless and has potential to ruin a round I paid good money for.

Take my round with midnight, probably one of the most fun rounds of golf I have played where I have not scored in and around the handicap, I shot a 15 on one hole and the total was probably well over 100.

Some people thrive on the pressure. I know if I set myself a target, it wont affect my game. Its when I go out with nothing to aim for that I play like Angelo.

just play your best and then run through the round in your head and tick off the things you managed. if you are thinking about those in your head then you may forget about it. for example, your on the 17th difficult shot to the green over water. in your backswing you think, oh i havnt lost a ball today and i might now at this late stage. you are likely to be in the drink.

just play, then review!

Shame you didn't play like that on Sunday I might have stood a chance then!! :p

Hopefully.... come on now, if your going to set a target at least tell us your ARE going to achieve it. However I dont think you need the "no bunkers" one in there, we all get in one now and then, the key is to get out of it.

Enjoy your self and keep an even mental state and you WILL reach your target.

Nothing wrong with targets, altho i kind of agree it is unnecessary pressure!

The "no bunkers" one is a bit silly. You can hit a good shot and still end up in a bunker!

Whenever I play a new course I take away all expectations of a score and try to enjoy the new experience.

One target I like to have is to score a Par (or better!) on the SI1 but that's about it.

Too many targets Big_Rick78,
I just set myself one target and that is to give 100% on every shot. That way, if I have a poor round, at least I know I tried 100% and have nothing to beat myself up about.
If I win..........great, if I don't.............at least I know I gave it everything on the day!

Slime.

I normally set myself these targets every time i play in a medal;

Break 100
shank at least one wedge shot from inside 100 yards.
Go in at least 5 bunkers
3 putt from inside 10 feet when on the green in reg at least once
sink a 15 to 20 foot put for a 8 on at least one hole
after having a birdie follow this up with a double bogey on the next.
lip out for birdies and miss the return 1 foot putt.

I have a great record of Achieving these goals whenever i have a card in my hand;)

Well I just got back. Have to say I really enjoyed the course, just a shame it wasnt very well marked. No numbers on the tees, no signs telling us where to go etc.
Out of my aims for the day I managed

Go round in less than 115 - Went round in 118. Very happy with that, especially as it was a new course.

Hit at least 5 nice drives. Definitely got this one, had 7 or 8 beauties.

Nothing more than a 3 putt. Had one hole where I had to 4 putt, but the rest were 3's and 2's. With one 1 putt too

At least 2 pars. Failed. Closest I got was a 5 on a par 4

No bunkers or water hazards. No water hazards, hit one bunker

3 Balls maximum lost. Worst of the lot, the rough was rough!! Lost 5 balls.

All in all though I had a brilliant afternoon, good banter with my mate and beat my previous best score :)
