Muirfield - Sorry I just don't get what all the fuss is about.

I have always understood that one of the things about Muirfield which marks it out is the layout (an outer and inner loop running in different directions), which means the wind affects different holes in different ways (as opposed to out and back type layouts).

Was just wondering if those who have played it have any thoughts on that aspect of the course?

That may seem to be a feature, but wasn't always the case and doesn't always happen. Like what happens on many links courses, it depends on time and tide. I've played it once where the breeze seemed into my face every hole!

What did you think of Gullane 1?

And everyone is forgetting the best links course in the whole wide world on this thread. The daddy of them all, Royal Dornoch.

It's difficult to be subjective about Gullane because the weather was absolutely foul.

I thought the 1/2nd and 17/18th were a bit weak although the flag on 2nd was right at the very back of the green which is only a few yards wide. Really liked the holes out at the far end where (weather permitting) the views would be fantastic.

Sadly it really was a day where it was just a question of get out and round and back to the clubhouse as quickly as possible. I would like to play it again in better weather but the summer green fee of £110 is a bit steep.

Not made it up to Dornoch yet but it is right at the top of my bucket list

I play Gullane 1 a lot and it's a different course now as what it is in the summer months. The rough is usually horrendous from May onwards and more often or not a wayward shot results in a lost ball. It's another course where modern technology has lessened some of the challenges but the turf is absolutely fantastic and there is never any question of preferred lies regardless of the time of year.

Gullane 1 is one of my firm favourites without a doubt.

I always think the 5th hole on Gullane No1 is one of the best holes I have played.

Scratch.......was a gentleman called Jas in your company?

No...nobody by that name.

5th.....the sweeping right to left hole up the hill? Can't remember if it's a par 4 or 5. Good hole if I'm thinking of the right one.

Royal Dornoch and Rotal Aberdeen are 2 firmly on my list, both very highly rated by those who have played them.

hoping to get a game at Royal Aberdeen this year, heard a lot of good things about it.

Dornoch i play pretty regular, and can be a beast. Got a game there next weekend as the Golspie open is off this year due to the storm damage before Christmas. Allways in good conditionwhatever time of year.

Met a Gullane member at my first club who reckoned (12 years ago) that the average of members over the previous 20years had risen 19 years! Sort of explained the 9 year waiting list!

Motorised Trolleys and Hip/Knee replacements have a lot to answer for!

Have to come on and say that the OP is getting a hard time for having a difference of opinion, now I have never played Muirfield and would love to play it after following Ernie round in 2002. All the guy is saying is he preferred a certain course over this we all have different tastes and should let others have the right to have an opinion without being jumped on. When some forumers met at crail last year and played Craighead and Balcomie, I actually liked the Craighead course better, now some would prefer Balcomie but that is all it is a matter of opinion no one is right or wrong.

Can't comment as I've not played either but I just laughed when I saw KB mentioned as potentially being better. KB is hyped up beyond belief. Not chuckled so much since Golf Monthly moved The Castle Course at St Andrews into the top 100 in Britain!

Stop it, Crawford - let sleeping dogs lie!;)

Looking forward to playing the Castle, as it seems to divide opinion more than most courses.

Agree that Saunton East is superb, and in my opinion by far the best links in the South.

Apart from the West, which is better and more interesting, and most of the Kent coast links?

The best compliment I can pay Royal Aberdeen is, it's front nine is on a par with Hillside's back nine. If they put both together in one 18 no UK course that I've played would get anywhere near it.

Can't comment on Muirfield but Hoylake isn't even the best links on the Wirral (That's Wallasey).

^^ This! ^^ Played the Wirral Classic in 2011 and Wallasey stole the show for me - you can see why Frank came up with his scoring system try getting through the 2nd without an NR!

Horses for courses though!

A couple of lads we went to Turnberry with a few years ago preferred the Kintyre to the Ailsa - they were wrong of course but that's their choice!

I can't speak for the OP, but I guess he wouldn't be too worried that peeps either agree or disagree with his opinion. I think it is more about the strength of some of the comments in disagreeing with the OP. Calling his opinion things like drivel is uneccesary and uncalled for.

The comments that have been made on this thread really don't bother me. A lot seems to have been taken out of context as well. Someone posted that I must be daft to rate North Berwick above Muirfield. I didn't actually say that, what I did say was NB is more FUN.

But I have played well over half the Top 100 courses, most of the big name links and 6 out 9 Open venues so I think I'm able to give a valid opinion. If people don't like my opinion then I don't have a problem with that.

What I do know though is I would rush back tomorrow to play NB but I wouldn't make the same effort to play Muirfield.

IN MY OPINION Muirfield = fantastic experience but overhyped course.

My apologies - I think I said something to that effect. I've obviously mis interpreted your original post.
