I don't think posters are slaying the OP because he dislikes Muirfield.
More to do with the courses he thinks are better.

Neither of which is a reason to slay anyone......

This thread has been made laughable because some people can't accept someone else's opinon.
It'a an opinion, it's what they like, what they prefer.
Some Forummers are a bit too precious about their courses....

Lighten up a bit....

Interesting reading the thoughts about N Berwick and Muirfield and the different types of course they are. N Berwick morphed into it's current form over a considerable period of time, from the 1830s through until 1932. It is an old fashioned, golf in the raw, sort of course as a result. Muirfield really grew into it's current form much later and was completed in the 1920s by Harry Colt. As a result Muirfield is a more refined and deliberate layout than N Berwick. Both very different, but both able to provide a golfing test of a very stern nature. Both have their merits and both should be on any serious golfers 'to play' list. One thing I would add, like any Open venue, the course looks totally different in normal mode without all the scaffolding and stands etc. Don't go expecting to see the fairways defined by the spectator pathways and seating stands. It's wide open without all that stuff ;)

Except when your opinion is proved correct, then you're just a knob.....:smirk:

Get over yourself. Did a Geordie pinch your girlfriend or something? You're very bitter towards them.

I think a lot of people are getting taken in by the hype that surrounds Muirfield. It is almost the Augusta of Britain, some mythical place that is difficult to get on and has an aura about it.

Sure, the clubhouse is fantastic, reeks of history and golf how it used to be. The food and service are also up there with the very best. And the course is tough, I don't deny that. But those things don't make the course any better. It is flat and it has too many straight holes. A few more doglegs and elevation changes wouldn't go amiss but as far as the elevation is concerned, you can only work with what is there.

I remember all the debate on here when the last Top 100 list was published and the GM guys came on and explained how the rankings are devised. I recall that (I think) the actual course layout only accounted for 35% of the total marks, the rest is made up by marks for facilities, condition, welcome, pro shop, ambience etc. Muirfield will undoubtedly score very highly in those categories which leads me to wonder how highly the course would be ranked if it was actually a municipal course in South London.

I have played many links courses that are more interesting in their layout, that is my opinion. Sorry if you don't agree with it.

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, I played St Anne's Old Links a couple of weeks ago and that's not a patch on S&A (Southport & Ainsdale) I think it's all down to personal test, but don't let that get in the way of a good argument!!

Indeed, personal taste. But I agree St Annes Old is fun but not first rank!

Valentino. If you can be tempted past the Southport area (and there's many reasons not to bother going past there) there are several fine course in the Sandwich area and a number of pretty good ones not far away either - Rye being particularly memorable.

I'd happily play anywhere buddy, can only comment on those I've played in comparison.

Should add, sandwich is only about 3 or 400 miles away so not round trip option either ;)

Really liked playing both of these courses ,would actually play The Castle again if i get the chance. Not had much experience of links golf so can't comment

Looking forward to playing the Castle, as it seems to divide opinion more than most courses.

Agree that Saunton East is superb, and in my opinion by far the best links in the South.

I almost can't see the point in replying to this........

Why can't someone come on here and say they prefer Hoylake to Muirfield?
Why ????

You and several others have not accepted the opinion of the OP - that is a fact not an opinion
Why?
Are you the only people who are allowed to say who likes this course over that course?
Are you the arbiters of taste and opinion?

Contrary to the belief of some this is still a free Country.....

Yep, happy to remind you......it's No1.

Possibly a lot to do with the reasons I listed in my last post ie. it's not because of the actual course. And depending which rankings you want to go by Birkdale, Turnberry and RCD are all listed above Muirfield in other rankings. I've not played Birkdale but I would certainly go back to play the other 2 before Muirfield. And if we are talking strictly about just the course then RCD blows it out of the water, it's not even close.

Ian, the irony of you saying lay off someone having an opinion was lost obviously

Edit to add for clarity - my opinion is the OP is wrong. It's my opinion.

So it's not no 1 for nothing then.

Can't comment RCD but im desperate to play it
