Most overrated golf course?

Another that thinks Wentworth West is overrated. Played it the autumn and just found it a long slog, especially the back nine. The other two courses there are underrated though, and much more to my liking.

Burnham and Berrow is a nice course, which was unfortunately flooded when we played it. It is overrated in that it is ranked ahead of Saunton East in the GM rankings.

Must admit I think Royal North Devon is overrated. Apologies to Mike, but it was in poor condition both times I played it, and apart from 5 holes at the end of the front nine, which are very good, is not really a links course. Too much muck on the couse from all the sheep, horses etc for my liking. The clubhouse may be the oldest in England, but it is not a cheery place, and some of the members we met were very unfriendly.

Dalmahoy.

I don't know if it's really well-regarded but before I played it, I was given to believe it was a bit special.

Maybe it was the 5hr 45mins that killed it for me.

Fair play to you Mcbroon,I would have probably shot myself by then!:D

Is that the west or east course?

I have some 2 for 1 vouchers for the dalmahoy.

ive not really played many top notch clubs as I never have the cash, but out of the ones I have played the Torrance in St. Andrews is the best

Not played many renowned courses so have a limited personal reference. The only one near me that has been built up to be something special has been Stapleford Park and that disappointed me. Just was a bit of a long slog and, whilst it is out in the country, it is surrounded by pretty bland fields that are not much to look at and adds to the air of repetition. Far preferred the views from Rutland Water or Stoke Rochford which have nowhere near the reputation. Both are more fun to play as well. Luckily when I do play at Stapleford Park it tends to be at an event so has never cost me more than £20.00 and I would not want to pay much more than that for it.

Yes, I was very underwhelmed first time I played it; thought it was OK but nothing special and certainly not what it had been cracked up to be.

In my opinion, i found Trevose to be vastly overrated as a golf course. The hospitality and value of the round was second to none, but there were far too many really boring holes.

When comparing courses in the same region (Perrenporth, St Enodoc and Sautnon) i just didnt think it deserved to be put in the same league.

Oh and has someone seriously said that they though Burnham & Berrow was overrated?????? WOW that suprises me, first for everything i guess.

Absolutely agree with this, never understood why Trevose is always in the top 100. Not a bad track but certainly not a great one.

I'd partly go along with thecraw and say Troon Lochgreen. Play through there quite regularly as I've got inlaws through there. It's not been in the best of nick for a fair while now. Far prefer its wee brother The Darley. Must be more than 15 years since Lochgreen was a 'good' course as it's living on its reputation nowadays.

I'd add Dalmahoy East to the list as well. Not in good nick and the changes 6-7 years back did nothing for the course at all.

Another vote for the West Course. This is a very nice golf course no doubt and the whole experience at Wentworth is very exciting, at least the first time. I haven't played it since the latest changes but unlike many others I think they may have improved it, in general. For instance the run of area around the ninth looks very nice when I gaze upon it from the train - and I like big bunkers. This was no classic sacred-cow of a Harry Colt before the changes. I think the first is a great hole but have no real love for 2-6 (5 and 6 are very bland). The run from 7-13 is a great set of holes - although I don't like the 2 trees you drive through on the par 5 12th. The run for home is not great - but I like the look of the changes to 17. Overall, as mentioned, a nice course but if I had to choose it or nearly any of the other heathlands in the area, I would not choose the West. The East is a much nicer layout on the best ground on the property - and it is much more a heathland course - although it is a little scruffy and desperately needs an architectural overhaul especially the bunkers. The only other course that comes to mind is Walton Heath - as with the West, it is a very nice course but feel it should be in the 60-90 rank not top 30 - I din't like the first, from where you then cross the road for the other 35 holes, the noise from the M25 and the feeling that holes are too on top of each other - sometimes there are several tees and greens very close to each other - and no way is it better than Hankley Common (a similar expansive heathland track) - although the gap in the rankings has closed a lot over the last few years.

I found the West Course at Wentworth much more memorable than the New Course at Sunningdale. That's probably because I had seen and walked the West so many times. It's the cost that tends to be the deciding factor as its clearly not great value for money but the Belfry can be had on a deal quite cheaply but would I drive up from Kent to play it again - yes, if the company was good, would I pllay the West Course again - you bet I would!

Ok we definitely need to settle the argument over Wentworth's West Course.

So here's the solution.

GM book three 4-balls for 12 lucky forum members who have never played there to play it.12 because if that's how many you need to decide whether someone is guilty or innocent in a court, it should be enough to decide whether a golf course is overrated.

Majority opinion rules.

Brilliant piece for the magazine.

As it's my idea it's only fair that the 12 would be me plus 11 others. ;):D

Of the (supposed) top courses I've played, the only one I would not revisit, even on a freebie, is the PGA @ the Belfry. At best it would make a decent practice ground.

What a coincidence - I had the same idea. So that's you and I and 10 others!!!
