Moral dilemma on Gimmes.

Its a shame as I always thing an integral part of any good matchplay game is the giving of putts and knowing when to give one (even a good 2 footer) and then get them to hole one much closer.

I guess the stumbling block would be if he got funny about holing everything but if hes cool then I don't see it being an issue. Just go out and give it your best shot and good luck

Yes, a tough one to judge. If *I* turned up to play a matchplay and my oppo' was wanting to score for a stableford/medal as well, I'd probably say fine.

At most of my clubs, matchplays have, on occasion been settled over/during a Weekend comp.

If it was a final or something, I'd not be up for this. If it's an early knock-out, then that's different.

You should be DQ'd from both comps. Playing two at a time is defo against the rules, and your commitee should know this. There is nothing in the rules to say you can over rule this.

On the other hand, my old club we used to play medal, stableford, and match play at the same time, so make him putt out.

This is absolutely true, no doubt. I do know of matchplays that have "run out of time" being decided (informally) over the toss of a coin or even less. I can't think my committees ever really cared t.b.h.

I think if 2 players (or 4 in my case all those years ago) agree to settle a match during another comp, that OK with me. I don't ever remember being asked for cards or anything, just a name to put through. I'm NOT saying it's right, but I don't know the full extent of the situation.....

Just back in, took the guy to the last hole where he knocked a shot from 150 yards sat on a mound to 4 feet, I made 4 and he made 3, game over! The strange thing is I had a few occasions that could have went my way including a lost ball on his part but was found by a fourball we were coming through. I also laid up on a couple of holes where i was looking good and ended up with halves.
At least I gave the guy a good run for his money, roll on next year! :D

Here's the rule Guys

33-1. Conditions;Waiving Rule
The Committee must establish the conditions under which a competition
is to be played.
The Committee has no power to waive a Rule of Golf.
Certain specific Rules governing stroke play are so substantially different
from those governing match play that combining the two forms of play
is not practicable and is not permitted. The result of a match played in
these circumstances is null and void and, in the stroke play competition,
the competitors are disqualified.

So technically you're both in trouble

Well done imurg, If I entered a matchplay comp and the person I played wanted this sort of arrangement, I would say "Its matchplay, play matchplay or give me the win and save me the trouble of having you DQ'd".

Just imagine playing this way and your opponant hits OOB off the tee, followed by fairway bunker with the next, followed by heavy rough and ball search with the next, followed by sticking it in the greenside pond with the next, taking a drop then skinning it through the back of the green for 7, when all the time you have been on the green for 2  CRAZY!

I think that your committee are in error by allowing Match and Stroke play to be combined in the same round. What happens when either one of you infringes a rule? Do you apply Match or Stroke play decisions? It's quite wrong and you should inform your committee of their error.
