I'll try and keep this brief!
Due to bad weather a fortnight ago out monthly medal was put back until tomorrow, the scheduled comp (the Fred Daly trophy) is also to be played at the same time, both white sticks and stroke.
To complicate things further, I am also playing in an internal scratch cup matchplay competition (time contraints meant we could not have played any other day with this round needing to be played by the 28th) which is entirely ok in the eyes of the committee as long as I finish out each hole for the stroke comps.
My dilemma comes in here, the guy I am playing, plays of 3, I am 9 at the moment, I must hole every putt for the stroke competition though normally I give putts inside 1 1/2 feet in matchplay but because I must hole out, should I make the other guy hole out also?

I didn't think you could play more than 1 competition at the same time? Side bets etc are ok but I thought playing 2 official compys at the same time is not allowed - prepared to be corrected on this one!!

different situations are covered by different rules and penalties are different from strokeplay to matchplay.

Got yourself between a rock and a hard place on this one.

Hope it all goes well for you.

I'm with Imurg on this one--dont think your allowed play two official competitions at the same time--cant play matchplay and strokeplay at the same time.

You are under no obligation.
When I play, unless there is a clear and specific agreement from the off for all 18 holes, I give nothing but tap-ins from the edge of the cup.

You may often find people trying to play the psychological game where gimme's are concerned, but in your situation in this game it doesnt matter, just use common sense, are you there to play your opponants game or your own?.

Ive spoken to committee men and they said there is nothing against playing a matchplay round during a strokeplay medal comp etc as long as I hole out each hole.
This isnt a side bet, its one of the more prestigious competitions and is the first time Ive entered it in this club. I am at a bit of a disadvantage for two reasons today, he is on paper, 6 shots better and also, he was also teeing off at 10.30 this morning for the medal and fred daly competitions. On one hand he will know the pin positions, but he will also have walked 18 holes.
Meh, as the saying goes, whatever will be will be!
The guy one of us will meet in the next round plays of 1 iirc and has won pretty much everything in the club before from what I can see. My outlook is that if you dont enter and make a good acount of yourself, you wont win. Wish me luck! :D

I'm always reluctant to give gimme's as i think it goes against the whole idea of getting the ball in the cup.

Although, i agree with HNJ tap ins on the edge i give but anything else i like to make sure my playing partner holes out.

I also dont take gimme's either :D

Its a really strange one this I didn't think you could play two comps at once never mind three and the rules treat stroke play and matchplay differently but if your comitee have ok'd it thats ok

As for the OP you could always do 36 in the day as having to hole everything may cause you problems in the matchplay (you may miss a putt your partner would have given you etc) obviously the strokeplay first as you are allowed to play the course before with matchplay.

The two or more comps at once thing I dont agree with at all for a number of reasons, but if thats what the club accepts then so be it. One reason I disagree is a matchplay comp is a matchplay comp and stroke play is stroke play. The other reason is for the record books, how do you record one round of golf as two? (or three)

Not right in my mind, its like playing a cracking round in a comp and getting the club to mark that score down for every strokeplay comp that year :D :Dnot really that different in reality. ;)

So what happens if you, say, infringe a rule that in match play means you lose the hole? If you're 200 yards from the hole are you going to play it out?

Sounds wrong to me. And just because the Committee has ok'd it doesn't mean its right!!

Im pretty sure you cant play matchplay and strokeplay at same time. Better check it out with the rule book brendy. Also if its not allowed in the rules your commitee are breaking the rules also by agreeing to waive a rule of golf.
Im not 100% on this but thats my gut instinct:)

You should be DQ'd from both comps. Playing two at a time is defo against the rules, and your commitee should know this. There is nothing in the rules to say you can over rule this.

On the other hand, my old club we used to play medal, stableford, and match play at the same time, so make him putt out.

I've had this problem once, i.i.r.c. in 1997. One of the rounds of our pairs scratch (organised between the competitors) took place based on the result of a medal. We had no choice, as the result had to be posted by end of the day on the Sunday.
All four of us played in the medal and, as it was scratch, we worked out which pair won each hole as we went along.
We ALL holed everything....simples.....

We lost in the semi's by default though.....argh.....that's another story.
