In a mixed comp, should women tee off the yellow tees?

I want to have a discussion about competition tees for women in mixed comps, the men use the white tees and women use the reds. As women gain a slight advantage in mixed comps due to having a larger handicap range and are quite a few yards further in than the men's tees, would it make sense to move the ladies back to the yellow tees for mixed comps?

Men use the yellow tees, but go further back for comps, yet women use reds for all. Would it make it more challenging, having an extra few yards a hole, bringing hazards into play?

What are everyone's views ? Why do you need to play off the reds? Would women be happy to play off yellows in comps?

This is in no way a sexist discussion, I'm just looking to hear your views as we have a number of lady golfers who are just as good as the men at our club, a number of single figured ones at that.

Why would they move?
their handicap is worked out from the reds and mens from the white, simples.

indeed - and to take it further men can play off Blue, White, Black, Green or Yellow tees as long as they are measure courses with an SSS; we are handicapped to that.

Ladies are handicapped to Red tees. If they played from (any of) our tees there would be a significant adjustment to their handicaps - I did see an estimate of the underlying difference somewhere but can't remember what it was.

They currently gain absolutely none of the advantages you raise in mixed comps.

I have no problem with ladies playing off the reds for mixed comps but SIDs do get on my nerves. Just because we are playing off their stroke index we have to give ladies ar our club 3 SIDs. This means they are nailed on to get a shot or even 2 on our SI1 17th PLUS they get over 100 yards to boot. It's not too bad if you manage to get a good tee shot off and out drive them from back there but it doesn't happen often.

Would have absolutely no issue with them moving back, but as Patrick said, their handicaps are worked out from the reds and so major adjustments would be needed.

Also, with all due respect, a lot of older female golfers I've played with don't hit the ball tremendously far. Taking them back to a point where they couldn't actually reach the fairway could risk taking their enjoyment out of the game. Obviously not an issue for the bigger hitting ladies :)

Fine as it is :)

Mens handicaps are based on the white/competition tees while ladies are based on the red tees, if the ladies started to play off the yellows they would have to analyse the yellow tees for ladies leading to a higher SSS so although handicaps should stay the same the amount of courtesy shots being given to allow for the difference in SSS's would be increased, so the loss in distance would be erased by a gain in shots received!

At our place the ladies SI 1 is the mens SI 7. Therefore a 6 handicapper is off scratch off of the ladies. They get two more to par as well so thats now plus 2. Then theres the yardage difference (call it another 2?). So the difference is around 10 shots.

An emphatic no from me, although I am not sure we have any really good ladies, who IMO should have a choice at all times.

Maybe I'm being a bit dim but I don't follow that at all!

OK, I get that the par is higher and the idea with the yardage (although ladies don't hit it as far, which is the point I think).

The SI thing confuses me.... it still goes 1 to 18 for both genders, although it may vary on particular holes, so no advantage whatsoever, surely?

I'm out on this one, men have two courses effectively one from the yellows with one CSS and the whites with another, this is at all clubs, with one offering blue & blacks too.

Now women play all their golf from the reds, but I do think they should have comp tees too, similar to men having yellows for bounce games and whites for comps. The only downside is a good majority that I have seen play at club level wouldn't make the fairways if they played much further back. I know this is a generalisation but surely as long as thy enjoy their golf that's all that matters.

Be good to hear some female opinions

this makes absolutely no sense to me at all; would love to know what you are getting at here!

which club?

huge number of men at our club have never played of the yellows! they consider it white (men) yellow (senior/visitor/society) red (ladies)

Can't really pass comment to much as never played in a mixed comp, though hoping to put that right next season and play a couple. I know its the same at our course though always Red tees only for ladies social and competitive play.

To put a slant on it though my dads course have 2 tees for the ladies, they have a forward social tee which is the blue tees, and their comp tees are the reds (which fall level with the mens yellows)

Back to skool Matty, you are making huge generalisations.
Why should the ladies SSS [CSS] be more than the mens.......not always the case.
Read your post and think of a 28 handicap man playing with a 2 handicap women [that may be hard] and tell me if it makes any sense.

Have they changed the rules re measured tees? I thought that a club could only have two sets of measured tees for the men.
The exceptions are clubs who have held national championships and above.
