Membership cost increase

I don't get some people. Conversation with one of the guys I played with yesterday about next years fees. He was VERY unhappy and had voted no to the price increase of almost 10%....full membership went from £990 to £1090 (£1020 for me as a 66 year old fart). He was really mad because they evidently took away a slight discount for people who had been members for 10 years. I told him I didn't know ANY club they gave a discount for 10 years.....are there any and I just haven't noticed? With the cost of pretty well everything going up at the golf course PLUS the purchase of the front 9 from a local church......the increase was fine with me. The guy seemed to think a bunch of people might leave the club because of the increase....can't see it myself.
I suppose the issue here is that many people's income isn't going up by 10% and if they accepted everyone out there trying to pass through inflation plus increases, they will run out of money very quickly. So I guess what people are doing is trying to keep a lid on their personal cost increases that are beyond their income increases as best they can. This often means making changes to what you do, changing the way you spend your budget or just negotiating harder (especially with stuff like telcoms and media). Some of these people might well leave. It depends on how often they play.

If a club is spending money on adding value, as seems to be the case with your club in acquiring land, then I think there is a much better case. But I suspect many clubs don't really look as hard for cost savings as individuals might do and find it easier just to try and pass the costs through. I guess we'll find out soon enough whether that works.

Clubs have all sorts of discounts. Ours used to have a discount for founder members, back to when the course was built, and also for couples, for 2 memberships. These were culled a few years ago and did cause some rancour. For some, especially the couples discount, it was part of the rationale for your other half joining so to take it away felt like 'bait and switch'. Might have been more reasonable to stop it for new members. At the same time, they culled 5 day memberships. I think we still have discounts for younger age groups up to aged 30 but I think you are maybe unusual if your club gives a seniors discount.

Mine has gone down by £200 (I may be moving clubs 🤭)
Down? Holy smoke. How and why? Are they losing members for some reason?

I'm in the camp that golf clubs need to cut their cloth accordingly, review which aspects of the operation can be changed (or even culled) and not just take the easy way out of expecting all inflationary costs to be passed onto members. But even I accept there have to be increases, let alone a cut in fees.

Sorry, I was being mischievous. It is going down because my new club is £200 less than my current one. I knew what I meant, it could read as you read it though.

I'm not moving purely because of cost, although it clearly become part of the equation when you are looking at comparative value for money.

I had a hunch that might have been the case.

I suppose one other option might be if a club had large tracts of land to sell off. Then you might be able to rebate the members in the form of a discount dividend.

Have they sold nine holes for housing 😳😳😂
14  .

No, the other course was always cheaper. Saying that, they have recently sold half a hole for housing which has secured their finances. They will be moving the original tee box so that the hole will largely remain the same, you just come at the green from a different angle. Not a big deal.

The club I am leaving is still currently in the process of selling 3 acres? of land next to the 5th green and 6th tee.....for £1million. You could throw that and a bunch of million more trying to solve the water issues on the course. Just need a spaceship to fly past and dump a couple feet of sand on it......not sure how much aliens charge for work like that:unsure:

We have a similar problem, very claggy soil, supposedly loam but appears more like red clay, certainly in parts of the course. We have historically boasted of being a fast draining course, even used to sell winter memberships to other club members, but not anymore. We're shut today for example, many other local courses are not or are partially open. On the upside, being on a 600 foot high ridge and often windy, it dries fairly quickly. As you say, the cost of fixing the fairways like this is basically insurmountable and I think will always limit how good our courses can be.

I suspect there are a lot of clubs trying to solve their drainage issues if we continue to get winters like this one.

I’m also currently a member of the same club as @Lord Tyrion and I made the decision 6 months ago to leave as although I love the course layout, know a lot of people there etc it just doesn’t drain well and I think it has been shocking value for money this season.

I’ve no idea how they solve the drainage issues being a clay parkland course but I suspect there will be a lot leaving at the end of this month.

The new course is a links course that is closer to home, £200 cheaper and open nearly all the time on full greens but even it has been struggling with the amount of rain this winter.

Totally agree that drainage is an issue. One of the reason I quit was because I can only play at weekends, a price hike had just been voted in and we were then subjected to basically 3-4 months of little to no golf because of the rain. Not much that can be done about it but when your annual membership then seems to be more a 6 month one than a 12 month one and they keep wanting to charge you more then you start looking seriously at value for money.

Our club has a 5% rise and hasn't replaced the absolutely worn-out mats on the two nets for years. They need to do so much work on irrigation and drainage but who knows if they will or are.

5% increase at my club. To be fair they’ve done quite a bit of work over the last year and given the severe drop in revenue for the last 6 months it seems a fair increase.

My place sold a load of quite useless land on the other side of the river. 50k. A large chunk has gone on refurbing the ladies changing rooms. All 15 members. Brilliant. Also said land was wanted to rent out and put sheep for ever and ever guaranteed income, and the clowns never returned the request. Also also said river is eroding the bottom end of the course and said land would have been useful to extend the course when thand part of the course gets cut off. But I'll be dead then.
