After a mid season slump i was feeling pretty low, and with scores on the up it was getting close to putting the clubs away for a few months. After a lot of sulking and stropping, a lesson with the pro confirmed my old habbits were back, an in to out swing path and strong left hand grip, but already knowing the drills this should be easy to sort.

So after a couple of range nights and around 500 balls, confidence was restored and it was back to the course.

Round 1 - 35 pts with 3 blobs, the blobs caused by wild drives while ironing out the faults i wasnt really worried as it was still a work in progress, but definately a move in the right direction.

Round 2 - An inter club match, where (13) and my partner (15) destroyed a 7 & 9 HC pairing 4&2, this was after being 3 down after 3 so we were chuffed, whats more from 5 games we were the only group to win our match from our course.

Round 3 - Our normal swindle where i shot 39pts, but more reassuring we won our side bet in the group with +4 on the front 9, +2 on the back and +6 on the match....

So with confidence at an altime high today is monthly medal day. after a pretty good warm up on the range, its off to tee off, and a par par start on SI 9 Par 5 & SI 2 Par 4 im in good spirits after narrowly missing 2 birdies on the bounce. Onto the 3rd, a short little par 3, around 135 to the pin at the back i cant remember the last time i missed this green. A big pull and after chipping back through the green sideways from a bush, a chip and 2 putts im now 2 over... Bugger!

a par on our 4th, with a chip in birdie on our 5th and im back to +1.... the smile reappears. My only bad drive all day down 6th and another bogey, which was rectified by a par on our si3 7th. Onto our 8th par 3 and although into the wind, im pretty comfy, after chunking a 7iron its a bogey and now +3. Onto the 9th, a huge drive and a peach of an 8iron see's me on the edge of the fringe around 10ft from the hole. Now common sense says a lag putt and tap in for a par, but im feeling good about this putt, and proceed to put it 6ft past the hole. Miss the putt back and from +2 to +4 in 2 holes. At this point playing to HC i should be +7 so im in a good position at the turn.

So onto 10th, a par 3 around 155/160 yards to the pin, and with a tail wind it should be an easy 7iron. for some reason half way down the swing i think about the putt on 9 that ive just cocked up.... duff... followed by a duff chip, then a chip and 2 putts for another double. a good drive up our si1 11th and im about 140 out with a slight tail wind, a flushed 8iron flies the green, and the tee behind and im in the cabbage and its deep. a hack out and another chip and 1 put and another shot gone, now at +7. a couple of silly mistake through the last couple of holes and i finish the round at +11.

Now anyone else would be happy with a win and a 0.3cut (estiamted but waiting for confirmed CSS) but i cant help but stew on the 6 shots i dropped on the 5 par 3's. for the last month ive rarely missed a par 3, winning 2 nearest the pins too, but today i couldnt hit a par 3 for toffee. we have 5 at our place ranging from 120 yards to 170 and to go double, bogey, double, par, bogey isnt laying well. its a shame because over the rest of the round from 13 par4/5's i missed one fairway and only dropped 5 shots.

So.....

Win in devision 1 - check
Cut 0.3 - check (may end up 0,6)
swindle win - check & £40.00 in the pocket...
Smile - not present.

i need to become an optimist and junk the pessimist,#

This is what saddens me most about the affect of golf on golfers. In football parlance it's called winning ugly. When I used to play up front there were days I'd score a brace and we'd win by a goal. Did I stew on the two or three golden chances I spurned or rejoice in the fizzing 20 yard drive that rifled into the top corner and left me at the bottom of a pile of ecstatic, celebrating team mates?

Because it's a solo sport our only cheerleaders are...well actually it's just us. You won the cash in the swindle, you won the medal and you got cut (albeit a small one). So what if it was a scrappy 1-0 win, stop crying in your pint and enjoy the win. Just think if you can beat the field playing like that they've got Norfolk Enchants of winning when you turn up next month with your A Game!!!!

Even the top pros talk about the shots they left on the course - the places where they could have done better. Give your self a break and look at the result of the round as a whole rather than dwelling on the places where you know that you can (and will) better next time.

ok i've slept on it and i now know why im not overly stonked about the result. if i look back at the par 4's and par5 yesturday i was hitting the ball very well, from 13 holes, my stats were pretty good.

from 13 holes, 12 fairways hit,
8 GIR on the 13, but 3 very close fringe misses going for the pin position, where pins were cut close to the fringe

I hit the ball yesturday without doubt the best i have hit the ball for 2 or 3 years, and to walk off having not taken full advantage of the swing on the day gripes me a bit. My target was 12 for this season, so 12.4 or lower and currently offer 13.3 only 4 shots of hc was doable yesturday, but a couple of costly mistakes and lapses of concentration cost me that cut.

on reviewing the round i played well and for that im chuffed to bits, but missing the final chance of the year to get to cat2.... im going to kick myself for a few weeks.

Just be happy that you can break 100 with that swing! :)

Good shooting fella..... we're always down on ourselves in this game, that's what keeps us coming back for more!

the swing is slowly become a work of art..... unfortunately it looks like a fatbird with an apple in here mouth.

Some reassuring words and compliments from my playing partners meant more than the win if im honest..

It sounding like you don't have a half empty, or half full cup but that you dont have a cup at all !!

Something I read in this months GM that Harrington said to Rory " you've got to celebrate your wins because they don't happen often enough"

Be happy - at least the mighty Eagles are doing well !

valid chris, i notice my best golf comes from when im enjoying it, the black spots in the round were card chasing moments. got to say the best part of the round was the company too... it made it enjoyable.
