Venue - Mollington G.C.

http://www.mollingtongolfclub.co.uk/

organised by TonyN.

Rather than take to the fairways of our home courses for a Saturday comp, 4 of us met up at Tony's home course.

We split into two groups TonyN and Vig (Dave) vs. RGuk (Dave) and evita4 (Alan). It proved to be a good idea for the two 18 h'cap players to be split up and Vig (in a moment of gentlemanly madness) also played off 12, so each team had a player with a few shots.

The first hole should have given us all some idea of just how demanding Mollington can be. A fairly large course with endless water, but hidden "challenges", we all hit decent drives down the first, only to discover that the two straight shots both ended up in a ditch that runs down the middle of the fairway (??) and then all shots need to be played over a lake.....which I (RGuk) failed to negotiate from a wicked side hill lie. We halved the hole (after letting an obviously quick 3 ball through) and moved onto the second. Holes were exchanged (mostly won with solid gross pars) and RG and evita were 2 up after 5. Nothing spectacular, but steady from all, fair to say.
Then Tony and Vig started to really pile on the pressure. Tony made good use of his shots and between he and Vig, they started a run which offered up 5 wins in a row.

Seemingly unable to plot our way down some testing holes, things were definitely heading the wrong way for me and evita until the 11th when Vig's shot to the green disappeared and with Tony out of the hole, we walked on with an undeserved win by default. So from 3 down (having been two up) we were just about in range again at only 2 down.

I feel we all played the last 6 very steadily but RG and evita sneaked in some nice scores (with a particularly good up 'n' down, with a shot for a nett birdie for evita at the 15th). Good putt Alan!!! We'd made up the 2 holes to level!

Mollinton is fully loaded with lakes (I described it as a 1/2 golf course and 1/2 water park!) and as if there weren't enough to get over/across/go alongside, the 17th is an Island green. This hole was halved (I cheekily got the £1s for nearest the pin) leaving all square down the last.

In the end, it was inevitable the hole would be halved in 4 (par) so we all shook hands to halve the match.....certainly the best result.

Needless to say, the two chaps from out of the county, proved to be good company and we did have a laugh at all the antics with the darn lakes!!! Watch out for evita's tasty hybrid drives and Vig's super 3 iron (is that the new Mizuno set?) and Tony....well Tony was Mr. Steady and made use of his local knowledge and extra shots, to provide stern competition with Vig alongside playing the creative way (showing some cheeky attitude to those pesky water hazards!!).

A good day, great company and a just result. I was just happy to make lots of pars when the few holes where I lost my way totally were so hard!!!! A good game, thanks to Tony and thanks to Alan and Dave for coming all the way over to Cheshire to make a memorable occasion....

Next time, snorkels and cossies, guys!

I'm sure the rest will all chip in....no photos a) too dark and b) all 67 ponds look exactly the same....wet :)

Cheers Dave, excellent write up and summed the day up pefectly except for one thing, Alan is actually Andy :D whoops quick edit before he gets on here :p

Big thanks for you 3 for coming over. Sorry it was so darn wet and muddy. Excellent company though and some great golf played at times considering the condition of the course.

DEFINITLY must play some of the courses Vig mentioned today and with a few more guys.

Out of curiosity dont suppose you have rough scores on the card do you?

:D :D :D

Glad to see you managed to get a game in and always nice to halve a match (unless it's a club knockout!)

Hoping to get a game in this coming week. Fingers crossed for better weather down here

Thoroughly enjoyed the craic on the day. Still chuckling at "Alan's" :D (sorry Andy, couldn't resist) intense dislike of the lakes and "that" shot that had me creased.

When I got home the missus had the tea ready and,,, you've guessed it a glass of water. That went straight down the sink. I'd seen enough water on the day.

Excellent day guy's, thanks!!!!
We really must organise a day when we're not looking for 4 dimples protruding through the mud, on the fairways.

I'm up for another when the ground dries out. ;)

Anyone who fancies a dryish walk round my gaff are more than welcome.

These meets are good fun. More of you guys should make the effort, it is worth it. Not knowing anyone is not a "get out"

Oh I forgot about Tony's "Tiger" impression of walking on water.
He set off across, what I thought was a very wet patch of ground. I thought, local knowledge, he must know a safe way through....... Wrong! it was wet and went over the top of his shoe and this was very early in the round. It can't have been very pleasant playing with wet feet.
BTW Tony, I would have been soooo impressed had you done it.

I love organising games, and it would be really great if I could get something fixed up for next season.
We've got a beautiful course down here which is very close to the M23 so it would be easy for people to get to.

I used to organise a big society day here. Superb course and great food.
Not too expensive and it would make a great day out

I'm more than happy to do something if enough people are up for it?

I think he means the 12th!

That was funny. everyones attention on the pond infront of he green some 250ish yards away, not the one 15ft away to right of us.

How the hell you found that is unbelievable but still cheered us all up after the phantom 11th!

Vig, surprisingly I didn't even notice the water in my shoes, too busy focusing on the great flood around us. One of those 'O s**t too late' moments.

Also vig, do u have the link to your site? Might take you up on the offer some time soon!

First up....I need to bow my head in shame....somehow, I thought Andy was Alan and never got steered in any other direction. Sounds bad (is bad....shame on you RG) but I find playing golf, I'd rather go and find my partner rather than shout across the fairway. Apologies Andy.....

Yes, we did stay dry (miracle) and although Tony "filled his boots" with plenty of crucial scores, he also got a wet foot and had to squish his way around!

I did keep a score (only the better of the two out of Dave and Tony) and can let you know roughly how you went.

Although we all had our moments, I reckon we managed ok to stay out of the water as well as we did.

Thinking about the "island" green, it's good my eyesight is poor....I didn't even know it was a real island, if I'd known there was water at the back, I'd have hit a wedge and dumped it short for sure!!!

H.I.D thinks i'm crackers, I just burst out laughing reading this again.
I don't know whether it was the acute angle that Andy hit it or the puzzled look on his face.
I did pay for my giggle though as I dumped it in the aforementioned pond.

Tony link to my course http://www.midyorkshiregolfclub.com/golf.html

Anyone else??

I actually heard you call him Alan once but thought it might have been to throw me, you know the invisible third player. Either that or a Rodney/Dave in joke :D

I was having a chuckle too .... until I 3 putted. :(

Just goes to show, Andy hit a few peachy drives with his TM R7. I wonder whether he was so worried about driving the pond that his mind wasn't set. Andy?

I'm well known for my dyslexia-type issue with names (seriously). I've called both my wife and daughter by my sister's name (Lucy).....I'm always calling the Alan in my Sunday 4-ball, Adam.....I think my Dog's called Rover, but I can't be sure.....

Incidentaly......it's written Andy on the card......sorry Andy..
