Rather than take to the fairways of our home courses for a Saturday comp, 4 of us met up at Tony's home course.
We split into two groups TonyN and Vig (Dave) vs. RGuk (Dave) and evita4 (Alan). It proved to be a good idea for the two 18 h'cap players to be split up and Vig (in a moment of gentlemanly madness) also played off 12, so each team had a player with a few shots.
The first hole should have given us all some idea of just how demanding Mollington can be. A fairly large course with endless water, but hidden "challenges", we all hit decent drives down the first, only to discover that the two straight shots both ended up in a ditch that runs down the middle of the fairway (??) and then all shots need to be played over a lake.....which I (RGuk) failed to negotiate from a wicked side hill lie. We halved the hole (after letting an obviously quick 3 ball through) and moved onto the second. Holes were exchanged (mostly won with solid gross pars) and RG and evita were 2 up after 5. Nothing spectacular, but steady from all, fair to say.
Then Tony and Vig started to really pile on the pressure. Tony made good use of his shots and between he and Vig, they started a run which offered up 5 wins in a row.
Seemingly unable to plot our way down some testing holes, things were definitely heading the wrong way for me and evita until the 11th when Vig's shot to the green disappeared and with Tony out of the hole, we walked on with an undeserved win by default. So from 3 down (having been two up) we were just about in range again at only 2 down.
I feel we all played the last 6 very steadily but RG and evita sneaked in some nice scores (with a particularly good up 'n' down, with a shot for a nett birdie for evita at the 15th). Good putt Alan!!! We'd made up the 2 holes to level!
Mollinton is fully loaded with lakes (I described it as a 1/2 golf course and 1/2 water park!) and as if there weren't enough to get over/across/go alongside, the 17th is an Island green. This hole was halved (I cheekily got the £1s for nearest the pin) leaving all square down the last.
In the end, it was inevitable the hole would be halved in 4 (par) so we all shook hands to halve the match.....certainly the best result.
Needless to say, the two chaps from out of the county, proved to be good company and we did have a laugh at all the antics with the darn lakes!!! Watch out for evita's tasty hybrid drives and Vig's super 3 iron (is that the new Mizuno set?) and Tony....well Tony was Mr. Steady and made use of his local knowledge and extra shots, to provide stern competition with Vig alongside playing the creative way (showing some cheeky attitude to those pesky water hazards!!).
A good day, great company and a just result. I was just happy to make lots of pars when the few holes where I lost my way totally were so hard!!!! A good game, thanks to Tony and thanks to Alan and Dave for coming all the way over to Cheshire to make a memorable occasion....
Next time, snorkels and cossies, guys!
I'm sure the rest will all chip in....no photos a) too dark and b) all 67 ponds look exactly the same....wet
