Talking to a guy at our Club last year who plays off 1 and asked whether he thought he would have been able hold onto the lead which Treveo Immelman had at one stage on the back 9 ie 6 shots to which he replied'Yes'. Rather him than me!

My question is : What score do you think you could shoot and tame Augusta? I play off 14 and anything just over 100 would be a bonus.

I think of the main tees most the pros and low single figure guys on here would struggle to break 90 and anyone from around the 8 handicap mark would do well to break 120. It is just so tough in terms of optimum position from the tee (length) and precision (long irons). I don't think many would have a strong enough short game to recover too many shots and the putting, well thats a different world completely on those greens

There's a pro-am at Sawgrass the day after TPC and they give a $200 prize to any pro who breaks 80. Not many do so I guess a cat 1 golfer would do well to break 85 at the Masters

Yea it's my short game that would absolutely cripple me and ensure I was definitely over 100. If the greens were running at full speed I would estimate a round average of about 5 shots on each hole to get down from 120 yards that's 90 shots already! I would definitely end up hitting at least one pitch onto a run off area that ends in water, and I 3 putt enough as it is so I don't even want to think about it. Even if I was striking the ball well off the tee / with my irons (which I can do- I never have a good short game!) I doubt I would be able to hold many of the greens as I can't get anywhere near the level of control the pros do. I would end up pitching it on the front and playing from a run off area at the back!

It would be good fun though :D

Just to add another question to this thread if I may.
How many balls do you think you would need? :)

Two big ones
;)

In answer to the original question, I reckon playing off 12 I would struggle to score 100.
It would be on and around the greens that I would leak most shots.

2 per hole I am sure would be enough..... wouldn't it. :D

I have absolutly no Idea what I would shoot. I wouldnt care really if I was given the chance. Tell ya what though, nothing outside of 6 inches could be given as a gimme :D

I'm the opposite

Anything inside putter length is a gimme :)

Apart from the greens I can't imagine anything too terifying tho' I'd start off aiming at level 6s, and then gradually move up to level 7s as my game fell apart.

the members tees are significantly further forward than the tournament tees and that is supposed to make it much less punishing but from having been lucky enough to see (but not play) the course in the flesh what TV can never show you is how severe the slopes on the green and run offs are. Often Hitting the wrong part of the green is sometimes worse than missing it

Our club pro is over with Rory and he shot +6 on a practice day. 90 is a bit high I suspect, some holes are not as hard others. For me, Id expect at least a few pars and a a triple bogey somewhere with water. 120 shots is an awful lot when you think about it, it equates to around 4 putts per hole. It would depend hugely on getting good distances off the tee. The greens are fast yes but they are also extremely true, you wont see the bobbles and bumps normal club greens sometimes produce so at least you know when you stroke the ball, its not going to veer off with a mind of its own.

120 seems a little high to me.

OK, so you'd have to putt with the care of holding a £500,000 faberge egg, and undoubtedly 50 putts could well be on the cards. I'm not so sure about the rest though. You won't lose a ball 2 yards off the fairway. There's no punishing rough so steady and straight ought to get on or around most greens for 1 over GIR. If you kept cool, you might make a par or two, then, (at a guess) a few 2 putt bogeys, then it's a question of damage limitation....

I reckon a competent 10-15 h'cap could sneak in at 30-40 over....so my "stab in the dark" would be 102-112.

Sounds unlikely, but if you just tap it round the greens, I reckon only 50 putts could be done....

Wasn't there a similar thing @ Torrey Pines before the US Open where they challenged a 10 h'cap golfer to break 100??

I think it was quite a big thing running over there. A few celebs tried too and I think the closest shot 105.

If I was armed with a good caddie and never took any chances I reckon I could shoot in the 90s

If you all chip in and pay for me to go out there and play I will have a tenner with each of you that I would knob it round in 100 or less.
It's wide open out there...you could smack it all over the gaff.
;)

My pal, who plays off 5 now, has played Augusta a couple of times from the members' tees and shot an 82 last time. There's a huge difference from the backs, though. The fairways are pretty wide apparently. It's the approach shots that cause the bother. Would love to have the opportunity.
