loving winter golf

For the first time our pro is running a comp on wednesdays, which is the only day I get to play, and it has made the round much more focused and enjoyable. Previously all comps stopped at end of october.

I use to love winter golf when I worked at the golf club especially in the week. Not many green fees, putting green to myself right outside the shop and if it got very quiet I'd lock the shop up, tell the steward where I was and nip into the clubhouse and play snooker. Happy days

Not really enjoying winter golf, like the banter and booze afterwards but apart from that I am sick of having to watch the weather forcast and wearing far too many clothes.

I must admit, November and December can be awful for golfing but once the really cold weather comes in January and you wake up with a bright blue sky, frost on the ground, you can't beat it. Tee off 8ish and you can play a round without seeing another soul. You soon warm up and you have to look at your shots in a new light. The only downside is it can get a bit muddy. The only time I don't play is Christmas week (only cause the misses won;t let me)

Couldn't agree more. Love getting out in the winter. The thought of waiting 4 months to play again is out of the question. What's the story with handicap reductions when winter greens are in use? Do they still apply?

No chance, its not real golf in the winter months.

Just why the hell anyone can derive any pleasure from playing....
1. Frosted rock hard fairways & greens..
2. on Muddy Tees...
3 from Winter Mats....
4. to Winter Greens....
5 all whilst wearing 3/4 layers.....
6. and wearing Golf Mitts....

is beyond me, and a lot of others it seems.

How can it not be real golf like???

Just because its colder and you have to wrap up doesnt make it any less enjoyable.

Well the way I see it, these tougher conditions can only Improve one's game.
Im looking forward to the summer, when the game will seem relativley easier!
:)

Each to their own eh?

I enjoy playing in the Winter, (except in the wind and rain),and wouldn't say it's not real, different, yes.

Both have their own challenges, hard and fast greens in the Summer, or soft and spongy in Winter. Same with fairways and in summer can be tricky to get a good clean strike off bone dry ones.

Now of course, if the question was when do you prefer playing, then the answer will always be in the summer. But still enjoy getting out in the Winter, and I don't wear mittens, they're for woosies :D

Golfmmad.

"Summer" golf here was wetter than the current winter weather we're having now. We had more preferred lies, flooded bunkers and poor greens than now. Over the past month conditions on most links courses I've played have been nothing short of superb. Yes, it is colder, but no more than having to wear a sweater on occasions, but still mainly short sleeves whist playing.
I have played in all conditions in the UK and have never had to wear more than one sweater and a wooly hat to keep warm.
Just wait 'till this coming weekend though, snow forecast for the South. The country will grind to a halt again!

I don't get the "pack up for winter" or "It's not real golf" brigade.
Do you think OLd Tom and his muckers packed up in October and didn't bother again until April? Its another challenge. To say its not real golf - what about in the summer when its lashing down, blowing a gale and the bunkers are flooded? The only difference is a few degrees in temperature. And you may not get preferred lies!

Personally, I'd play every day if I could. Rain, shine, hail, wind, snow or whatever the Golfing Gods throw at me to test my game. If I can get round in a decent score now on a windy, wet day it will only help if I get the same conditions in 6 months time in the June Medal.
Having said that, when the temporary greens come in that changes matters entirely. But it doesn't stop you hitting good shots into a temporary green. They may not stop and you can't putt properly on them but you can still play the shot.
I'll be out tomorrow. Sub-zero temperatures and a cold north-east wind. I just gotta play this game......

It seems to be the same faces who crop up on these "I don't like" threads:

I hate Winter Golf
I hate 4somes
I hate slow play
I hate women golfers
I hate medals
I hate scrambles

You must really look forward to that individual stableford in July when the sun shines!! :D :D

I agree playing in winter conditions really help, not every round played is sunny with no wind.I think and its only a personal oppinion that some people have fallen out of love with the game,i find at this moment i eat, sleep ,and dream golf and want to play all the time, however in years to come that may change, however while i do love the game i will play whenever i can rain or shine, and i will enjoy it.

Agree 100 % Imurg. I will also play whatever the conditions. I love grinding out a decent score when the weathers against you.
