Ashamed to admit I blew a good round yesterday after the red mist descended. It was almost like an out of body experience; I could see myself being a brat but had allowed myself to get so wound up I couldn't calm down.

This is out of character for me and resulted from the accumulation of a series of incidents which were all very minor so very surprising.

What can you do, when you know you've lost the plot, to regain your cool?

very difficult to break the cycle when poor shots make you angry and anger creates poor shots.

You just have to really try to make a conscious effort to accept poor shots as part of the game. When I miss the green I embrace the challenge of getting up and down. If I make a complete hash of things I allow myself to be a dissapointed or even a little angry but only for 5-10 seconds. After that I want to be focusing on the next shot wherever it may be and not on the previous shot I can do nothing about.

As you discovered yesterday getting angry does not improve your game so give yourself a little talking too, take a few deep even breaths, try not to clench your teeth or bunch your fists, smile and carry on.

It wasn't even poor shots that made me lose it.... the poor shots didn't really kick in until after the red mist.

Started with 7 pars and made the mistake of allowing myself to think about getting a cut (way too early for that).

Slow play and group ahead not letting us through.

Birdie putt at 7 lipped out.

Ball stopped by rake in bunker at 8 leaving a nearly impossible shot, which I failed to get out.

Par putt at 11 lipped out - inexplicably - when it looked to be right in the middle of the hole.

Chatter from other players on the course at inopportune moments.

Only a handful of bad shots from 9th onwards.

Damage was already done but there was an incident at 18 where we're waiting to tee off and a guy on the first is standing right in the middle of the 18th fairway even though his green isn't clear and once it clears it isn't his turn to play. After he plays he walks diagonally down the 18th fairway instead of getting off it immediately. After which I smack my drive into the trees......

As I said, all really minor stuff but I just snapped. Not good.

i had a series of unlucky moments yesterday. bad bounces and lips outs galore, not to mention a missed 8 inch putt. got me a bit steamed up but decieded to knuckle down for the back 9 and try and make the buffer. hope i did.

stop - look around and focus on the activity of the natural wildlife instead of the activity of other golfers, or your game.

put it all back into perspective, then get on with the game.

Bob's perspective works too!

It was the heat chap, by the 18th yesterday I have to reckon most folk were physically exhausted and mentally as a result, only 12 guys out of over 100 shot better than h/c yesterday, rock hard greens and strong winds played their part but the heat was a big factor too. Shrug it off, you know its not your usual demeanour so don't let it bother you, almost too hot for golf (but great weather for drying)

:)
