Longest drive ?

Imurg. Dies it really matter what an average drive is though? Surely average carry is more important. That way you have an idea of whether to take on a guven line over water or some other nasty little hazard.

In my case i want to know what i'm capable of hitting into greens and iver hazards. Not what the driver dies on a bland hit and hack par 4

distance - carry - same meat different gravy.

My point is that too many people conveniently forget the clonkers when working out their averages - you have to include everything whether you're looking at total distance or carry. And carry is virtually impossible for us to measure accurately unless your ball plugs or you can find the pitchmark.

I agree. I tend to think I can hit the ball a decent trip. It counts more when you need to know if you can carry a corner, hazard etc. There are definitely holes where restraint is required, some will still try and take the skin off the ball regardless. The same people pound driver after driver down the range and wonder why they cant putt for toffee.
Yardage doesn't win competitions, its all about strokes.

The longest driver of the ball on the forum is probably PNWokingham, well he would be if he hit the ball with his practice swing which is almost feckin' supersonic!!

During a round with Paul, I find myself giggling quite a lot.
Usually after he has taken one of his practice swings.
I cannot understand how he hasn't done himself an injury before now.
I have never seen anybody swing a golf club as fast as he does.
And I don't think I ever will.
It has to be seen to be believed.
:D

My longest recorded measures in at 374 yards, I once hit 280 into a headwind. Average wise on flat ground with no wind I would say about 240-260 discounting duffs :)

I learnt long ago (feb) that the fairway is a better place to be and the extra 50 yards from a good drive don't make much difference if I hit my irons well and get up and down for nett par or better.

My shortest drive was minus 8 yards:(. After hitting a tree on the third at Blackmoor, it rebounded back over the second green, slowed down as it went through the greenside bunker, and finished in the rough. Five iron through the gap where the old tee used to be, on in three, and after two putts, a solid bogey five.:)

Sorry this is on the wrong thread, but couldn't find a shortest drive one.

This time of year i would expect 200-240 depending on fairway and gradient. In the summer probably more consistently around 240 with a handful going as far as 275. To be honest i played London golf club last week and par'd 7 holes with one birdie. I hit both drives and irons high so don't get a lot of roll. There were a few 10's and 8's and each one was due initially to a bad drive. Even at 200yd drives if you can make good iron shots and i was last week you can get a good score card.

This is SERIOUS poetry - you have got a new career Smiffy , you'll make a fortune as the "Golfers' Laureate"
- brilliant tempo, and amazing observation

Bravo young man :)

No point. It will be won by just one, pieman, snelly, jammy dodger, Owen Thomas, the short hitting region3, or swinger. These guys do hit it long. Proper long. No lies, no bull.

I have perfected 300 yard drives.

I tee up the ball
*** it up the fairway as hard as I can
Then run at full gallop in the opposite direction.

This thread has been great for a laugh

A mate of mine once hit a drive about 320 yards, downhill and downwind when it was blowing a gale and after a couple of pints he always likes to mention that he drives it over 300 yards, great fun to listen to...I am sure it wont be long now before I see him lose a tooth with his follow through

I guess boys will be boys, depending on who the circle of boys is the 375 yard drive can equate to banging 3 birds at once with their twin sisters fetching you a stella...I was upset, I wanted a heineken

For the record, I THOUGHT I drove it about 250 yards, but the trackman sorted me out, turns out peewee over here can only carry it about 200 to 220....at least I have the twins

Who won the longest drive at Blackmoor. Wasn't that Snelly. Whoever it was creamed on there and it was miles in front of the group I was in and we all hit good ones. There are a select few on here that have the ability to hit it 300+ on a regular basis and still be straight

For an old boy (past the half century) I can hit it a fair way but have been reigning in the urge to smack it lately and my scoring has improved as a result.
Maybe if we have a GM long drive comp we could have age categories, I'll be in the old fart section.

I played with fundy once. Easily past my drives with his 3 wood.

I'd fancy my chances on a yd/lb basis though ;)
