Leaving A Club Out

if you read Dave Peltz short game bible he got Tom Kite to ditch his 6i and I think he went on to win the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

When I decided to have four wedges in the bag I had to drop a club at the higher end of the bag so my pro adjusted my 4 iron to be about halfway between my 3 and what the 4 iron was making an even gap between my hybrid and frankenfour leaving space for the additional wedge. I now hit it a steady 200 yards whereas I used to hit it 190 and the 3 iron around 195 as it was also my weakest club.

I was looking at my Trackman numbers last night and noted that my 4i and my 19* hybrid are only about 5 yards different. Thing is with the wind at our place sometimes the 19* is almost pointless so they will both have to say.

I did snap my 5 iron once on a follow though round a tree. As you suggest, every short from then on I wanted a 5 iron. (it was a great short, shame it cost so much)

I'd leave out my 56 degree wedge if I had to as that is the club i least use . I do however use all 14 in one round on a regular basis. I just wish Nike made a 3 iron in my set as my 4 iron is the go to club at the moment for 2nd shots on par 5's and i hit it much better that hybrids and woods. Seems i'm in the minority though and cavity backed 3 irons are very hard to find nowadays.

I can't remember the last time I hit my 5 iron

4 and 6 irons see plenty of use, just not the 5.

I'm not falling for that lol.
It could spawn another half a dozen how far do you hit your...... threads!!

At the moment (apart from driver and putter) I take 3w, 5w, 4h, 5-PW, 52, 56 & 60. The gap I don't like is 5w > 4h.

I also have available a 4w, 3h and 4i.

The easiest options with available clubs would be to strengthen lofts of irons and swap 3h for 4h or lengthen 4h or shortern 3h. Changinging lengths of clubs can have a noticeable effect on flight, you may like the changes or may want to use lead tape to adjust back.

You may get away with only needing to alter the 3h or 4h or even shortern 5w.

Ha ha, it was meant to be a question that you ask yourself

Ah, I see.

I did that after having a round with a couple of shots that fell right inbetween 5w and 4h, and I reckon the gap between them is 20-25yds.

I'm going to make an effort this weekend (if it happens) to really commit to a full swing on the 5w but gripped down an inch or so and see what happens.

what sort of distance is the gap at? its got to be 200yrd plus?
I honestly don't think I'd worry about gaps that high up in the bag, if I can get chipping distance from 200+yrds I'd personally be happy. But I suppose it depends on what your game relies on (long game vs short game)

What hybrids are you using Gary? Are they adjustable ones? If so can't you just tweak the lofts down on them so you extend the gap between your 5i and 4h and get the 3h closer to your 3w? Try and bridge the gaps a bit more. Always a going to be a problem with anyone that carries 4 wedges though, something has to give at the top end.

It's not really about getting close from 200+, it's more mental.

If I leave an easy-ish chip from that distance I'm happy, but it messes with my head knowing I've not got enough club, or worse, too much.

Im the same. If I'm stood there with say a 210 yard shot but all I have is a 200 or 225 yard club then I'm buggered. I hate trying to hit an easy long iron and I don't like trying to hit a hard one either. I'm more than happy though hitting different distances with my wedges though.

You really have that big a gap between your 8 and 9 iron?
