Layup distance

Do you have a favourite layup distance ? I hear this a fair bit, people saying they prefer a full shot to the green from say 100 yds , but to me unless you are forced into a layup then getting as close as possible is better. Id much rather have 40 yds Vs 100 yds.

Closer is more often than not better. No one who will comment they prefer to lay up to a specific yardage has the ability to lay up to that specific yardage. I’d go as far as to say most won’t even know how to calculate doing so properly.

Good to have a layup distance I like when I'm constantly chipping out sideways with no shot to the green available.

Same, I get it as close to the green as I possibly can that doesn't bring danger into play.

Spent all winter hitting loads of wedge shots at 40-100 yards in 10 yard increments so I'm comfortable with all those distances.

Generally, closer is better for me.

But if I need to lay back, 80 yards is a three quarter swing with my 54 degree wedge, which is a shot I feel really comfortable playing and generates enough spin to stop quickly.

strokes gained clearly states closer is nearly always better. EVERY level of player is better from 40 yards vs 100 yards.

Minor nuances might be at awkward distance - e.g. for me i'd prefer about 110 yards over 95 yards because its a full GW vs a part GW or full 54 (which is a different type of club and less forgiving). But id take 40 yards over either of those

If the pin is behind a bunker 80 yards is preferable, otherwise as close as possible. To elaborate, my dispersion long or short is probably tightest at that distance. Dispersion left or right is tighter the closer I get.

If I can’t get it within 50 yards, I’d prefer to be 100 away. No confidence in my ability with a half wedge shot atm

And as it’s a confidence game, I’d rather not be stood over it thinking….dont shank it don’t shank it

Utter drivel (n)
Why is it utter drivel?

How many people are capable of hitting the ball such a precise distance they can accurately lay up to their favourite yardage? Anyone in a double digit handicap will have at least a 20 yard front to back dispersion with a short and mid irons. Which grows as clubs get longer. We will ignore the fats, tops and slices into the deep stuff for now.

Now factor in working out exactly where the pin is located, wind, temperature, elevation changes, the random ball they are using, slope etc. in order for them to pick a club to lay up with. How many people even begin to think about these things?

If by some miracle they have left themselves the perfect yardage. They have then to actually hit their favourite number. Which given the front to back dispersion is unlikely.

Laying up to as specific yardage simply won’t happen often enough to make it a worthwhile strategy. Getting the ball as close to the hole as possible every shot is the best strategy.

For me (and I’m sure most handicap golfers) the closer the better.
For most of us the closer the green we are the less chance of making a mistake, or at least a less costly mistake.
And if you compare us to the pro’s the best chance we have of playing a shot they would be pleased with is closest to the green.
I’m like Scottie from 6 inches 😂

If I am laying up it will be because there is a hazard of some sort i can't carry , in which case I'll use my watch to get me yardage to the hazard and hit a club I know can't reach it. I'm never going to think of I'll layup to 75yds for a little wedge or something, just to impractical.

There is one hole at mine, the 18th, where the green is very much elevated from the level of the fairway - like above head-height. On this hole I don't like to be hitting a 40-70 yard pitch because I find it very difficult to play that shot to an elevated green, so I tend to hit 7 wood or hybrid off the tee and leave myself a full wedge shot from 90-120 yards.

But in most other situations I would try and get as close as I can to the green without taking on any trouble.

Agree with what you are saying - and makes me wonder why people buy lasers when they can’t hit exact distances 😎

I went for a fitting yesterday....hoping to change back to irons instead of hybrid irons. I'm sticking with what works. Right off the bat I hit my 8 iron/hybrid and the fitter asks me " how far do you think that was".....I said I hit it decently.....about 125. I was way off.....it was 123.
