I was in the New Direct Golf in Milton Keynes today perusing the 3 woods. I'm toying with getting a 3 wood and dropping a wedge so I asked to try some.
No problem at all, set up the kit, taped up half a dozen 3 woods from Cally, through Nike, TM, Adams and Mizzy.

Half an hour later and I'm totally confused.
Now I'm not a 300 yard Bomber but I can hit a longish ball.
I couldn't carry any of these woods more than 200 tops. Furthest, with run went to 220. Happened to have my 17 degree 3 wood (really a 4 wood) in the boot so tried it to compare. Low and behold 215-230 with a bit of rollout too.

So it seems I don't need a 3 wood after all.....

Now I've just got to get the yardage gaps sorted from 4 wood through to the irons.

I dont get that at all, I would say you are a pretty long hitter. Is this an outdoor thing as its a pretty muggy day? That said your own club went well enough. What about shafts? Something is off there.

What did they say when you want and got your 4 wood and whooped all there new shinys?

It's all inside, a kind of simulator type thing.
The Guy was fine about it to be honest, he said if I hit that old thing so well I might as well keep it until it breaks.

Did they have it set up right? I really wonder with these place if they know what they are doing

Chris

May be with less loft you don't generate enough spin to keep it airborne? I'm assuming you were hitting off the deck, not a tee peg.

All 3 woods were 15 degree.

I was hitting off an extremely low tee. Really it just gave a good fairway lie as the ball sinks into their mat a bit.
Tried some straight off the mat and they went ok, not dissimilar to the tee'd up ones.
On the subject of spin, some of the shots with the 15's had more spin but didn't "go" at all.
I reckon it's down to the shaft. The Flightspeed Gold in my 17 must fit my swing just right. THe others obviously dont!

I did exactly the same yesterday at another direct golf.
I went in to to try out the Adams super hybrid 15*.
I can't remember the name of the launch monitor but I know it wasn't a trackman or vector.
I was striking the ball pretty well with it and would probably expect a distance of about 220-230 but the monitor was coming up with 170-180.
I asked the guy if it was accurate distance wise, and he said in his experience it was probably approx' 40 yards out.

It kind of ties in with your findings but doesn't explain why you was getting reasonable distance with your 4 wood.

Whats the point in having a bit of kit that is 15-20% out? Wierd.

I rarely trust anything that comes from a shop monitor. I'd rather find a good pro somewhere and try it out in the open air or better still go to a proper C/F centre and try the different makes and shaft combos and take away the data. OK it might cost c£40 to do but then you've got all the information you need to take to your club pro (ideally) to order

Again just for interest, did one of them feel better than any other?

What were you hitting, range balls? that might account for some of it but I agree with Alex, what's the point if it doesn't give accurate data.

I hit proper(ish) balls.
TO be honest none of the clubs felt good, maybe the Adams but I didn't like the look and hit it shorter than the rest.
