Hi guys, after having a few rounds of playing well but struggling to see where im losing shots ive decided to start keeping a few stats, e.g GIR, putts per hole, fairways hit etc, hopefully this will give me a rough idea of what departments im struggling in.

I dont suppose anybody knows of any excel spreadsheets or software which is either free or cheap which you can input data in?

Thanks Craig

Strokesaver2 seems to get the nod from a lot of peeps, think its 30 quid or something. Not 'cheap' but then again same price as a new golf tshirt etc so in the grand scheme of things not too shabby

SS2 is the best and most detailed software I've used. The oncourse data takes 10 seconds to fill in as you mark your scorecard so that side is simple and it takes a few minutes to key it in once you're home. After that it gives you everything you can want.

It is a one off payment and I think if you are serious about keeping your stats to look at the weak areas and see the patterns emerge then it is value for money

do you still use it Homer, reason I ask is off 13 does it make a massive difference, I am off 28 ish so therfore would make a huge difference

currently use the data from golfshot iphone app which is quite basic

SS2 is excellent. I think there's a golf training aid website that has a discount code on it. Can't imagine which one though!!

I use it myself, after it was recommended to me on this forum, I liked it and added it to the website.

If you're currently keeping your score and stats on golfshot, get yourself golfplan from the same developers. It breaks your stats down into areas of strength and weakness compared to your handicap. So like SS2 it actually gives you an idea of how you're playing to your handicap, not to par!

I've been using the golfshot and got the golfplan app for 59p which covers most areas, it's not great in depth but covers fir/GIR/putts etc and gives you areas to work on. Worth a look if you don't want to shell out.

I use it and I'm off 8.
It makes a difference to me.
But it only makes a difference if you analyse the stats properly. For instance, you may have taken 40 putts but why? Is your putting rubbish or are you leaving yourself so far from the hole on approaches that a single putt is a miracle? If so, Why? Is it because your approaches are shite or do your tee shots leave you in such dark places that reaching the green at all is the miracle?

So there can be a number of reasons for taking 40 putts - you just have to analyse the stats properly to work out why.

The most importants stat outside of gross score is greens in reg, as of all the stats greens in reg will be a better indicator of where you are in golf. The more greens you hit the better your scores will be (based over a number of rounds).

I use it all the time. I also send a monthly report to my pro so he can look at where I'm doing things wrong and right in terms of the key stats and work our next lesson around the current issues.

i use excel and i think its better than any statistics software as you can put in whatever stat you want to cover in it. I can give you one of my spreadsheets if you PM me ;)

I have set up my own spreadsheet based on my course. I can see which holes I am struggling with and it has changed the way I play some holes. I only monitor putts other than gross scores as I don't think the others are particularly relevant to me. Mine took I few mins to set up and it auto puts the raw data into easy to read graphs.

Im agreeing with this 100% which co-incides with imurgs post.

Be carefull not to get too obsessed with stats, they can mess with your mind.

I use SS2.
To me the most impotant stats are: GIR, putts per GIR, par scrambles and birdie conversion.
To me the most pointless stat is putts per round, because if you hit alot of GIR (like me) you will hit more putts than if you always miss and get up&down everytime.

I use the free Chart My Golf software.

It is very detailed with loads of stats and graphs. Like HomerJ my golf pro will look at my stats before a lesson. Chart My Golf produces a save file which I email my pro and he can load into the software on his pc.

They are constantly updating the software and actively encourage us to write in with requests. I have made a few suggestions myself.

They did mention recently a bogie-golfer and double-bogie-golfer comparison was an imminent update which might be what you are after. Ask them, they are quite quick to respond.

Right now they do a Personal Stroke Index which orders holes into most difficult and most easy. You can do this for every aspect of your game, eg strokes, sand saves etc, and for any time period. That was really useful for picking up problem areas and more importantly explaining why.
