Justin Rose - if he wins.......

Well done JR - joins Scotland's Andy Murray as current holder of a US Open Championship - now that's a cool pairing of trophies for this year's SPoTY.

Great 2nd by JR on the 18th from astride the 'Hogan plaque'. Which brings me to this curiosity. We all know Hogan hit a 1 iron for his second shot back in 1950. Here's how he describes it in his introduction 'Fundamentals' to his great book Ben Hogan's Five Lessons

...in 1950 at Merion, I needed a 4 on the 72nd to tie for first in the Open. To get that 4 I needed to hit an elusive, well-trapped, slightly plateaued green from about 200yds out. There are easier shots in golf. I went with a two-iron and played what was in my honest judgement one of the best shots of my last round, perhaps one of the best I played during the tournament.

So yes - I'm curious.

I have/had a fabulous b/w print of Hogan at the completion of that shot with his 1/2 iron. [Looks like a 3 to me]
[It is residing above the fireplace at my daughters house]
Probably the greatest ever golf photograph.

Just a quality display of golf throughout the 4 rounds. And those 2 shots into 18. World class.

And landed me a nice little earner as well.

I had Justin each way at 25/1 and Jason Day each way at 45/1 :)

Yes - I had it as my avatar on here for a while - I have it engrained into my memory and I see his beautifully poised finish in my minds eye whenever I am about to play a shot.

But what was the club - it was either a one-iron or a two-iron - it can't have been both. I'm guessing it must have been a one-iron given all the fuss made - but what a weird mistake to make in his book. Unless it has become truth borne out of a myth. The book was written in 1957 - so I guess he could have forgotten?

[EDIT] And hey presto - Ben's back

I am gutted....

I tried to stay up to watch it all, but fell asleep when JR got to about the 14/15th, and then proceeded to wake up 30 mins after it had all finished!

Glad he won though...I wanted him or Lukey D, but didnt want to say anything because as soon as I do, they normally blow up!!

Fantastic 2nd on 18th - I thought it was going to be within 3ft - would have just about had him nailed-on winner - but roled into fringe - but very neat little three-wood chip that he nearly holed - class :)

It is - yes - but seriously - was it a one-iron or a two-iron? His book says two-iron - Merion and 'the legend' say's one-iron. Someone is wrong - or is there a logical answer?

Isn't the actual club now in the USGA museum???

Similiar sort of confusion on the actual club Sandy used from the bunker to win the Masters. And, thats a whole lot more recent...

Always thougtht Sany hit a 7-iron,

Well 'the' so say Hogan club was on TV during the US Open and I'm sure they said it was a one-iron but never showed the sole - what with Hogan saying it was a two-iron. They also showed a club with the face well worn that Hogan identified as his (one stolen) and they said it was a one-iron. Maybe it was a two-iron tweaked to a one-iron loft (or vice versa). Oh well someone out there will know.

As seems usual for me I've managed to go on holiday during a major. It's time however I lucked out and the cottage I am staying in has Sky Sports so saw every shot last night.

Rose was awesome, I said earlier in the year he is the most likely Englishman to win a major and he has a great attitude and a great swing. Lets hope there's more to come.

Watched the highlights tonight and blubbed AGAIN when he looked to the heavens and thought of his Dad...

Still in awe of how he played the 18th...talk about coolness under pressure - awesome.
