Just out of curiosity.......

You are playing in a big competition at your club.
You have never played with your playing partner before, but he plays off 17 and starts birdie, eagle.
What would you be thinking as you walked off the second green.
Honestly.

As my Playing Partner, I'd be thinking 'Keep it up and I'll maybe contribute later'.
As my Fellow Competitor, I'd be thinking 'One of us could be on for a good score today'.
As my Opponent, I'd be thinking 'Hang in there, he's a 17-capper for a reason'.

Wouldn't be thinking 'bandit' just yet, though there is obvious potential. Definitely wouldn't be thinking 'sand-bagger' because I know what can happen in golf.

I'd be impressed but not too bothered. Given the start and finish at my course, plenty of time to lose those shots. I've played with high teen handicappers that have been a couple over par after nine. However by the end they are perhaps only a shot or two under handicap and very one can have a good day. No alarm bells for me and the bandit radar definitely not going. Now if this golfer was called Smiffy..........

I'd have the "Ba" already formed in my mind, but plenty of time to change it if the wheels fell off. Good starts happen to everyone. Good middle and Finish happen much much less.

I'd be hoping for them to keep it up and play a PB. There is something excellent about playing alongside someone who has the game going for them on the day. The buzz in the group can be contagious, it can pull everyones game up and I find I try harder to level my head so as to help them keep thiers. Much nicer round than everyone going to pot.

18 handicap 6under is about the level I would start to have my concerns about my playing partner's possible banditry.

I have been known to do that start rob and same handicap, but few and far between, but the 7 and 8s are not as few and far between.is this a what if question or did it really happen?

I would be thinking "So what is the best way for me to play the next hole".

Does not matter what an FC does on a couple of holes, I need to play my own game.

Depends on the shots that had been played to register those scores. I take it this would be at Cooden? If so, then it's quite easy to eagle the 2nd hole as it isn't long and any half-decent drive on the fairway would leave only a mid to short iron into the green. However the first is a difficult opener, but again, if a decent drive is on the fairway then every chance irrespective of handicap. If your playing partner then made par at the next two then I would definitely be thinking aye carrumba!!

It didn't happen to me mate, I was just asking out of curiosity.
The eagle on 2 was a slam dunk in the hole with second shot on a par 4.
1st was a nut down the middle, mid iron into the green and a single putt.

To be fair Smiffy, haven't you had purple patches in a round, either at the start, the middle or coming home on turbo charge. You'd be one of the last I'd ever put in the bandit category and so if you started like the guy in the OP apart from the assault my ear drums would be getting I'd be happy you're playing well and seeing where it took you

Hmmmm....

Surprised no-one else has twigged the connection yet Smiffy ...........

And no, it wasn't me at East Sussex National recently - or Smiffy anywhere ;)

Playing today in the winter league

We gave our oppo's 14 and 13 shots respectively

They started - par birdie birdie par and we were 4 down ??!!

Thankfully we stuck in there and won 3&2 - went round the 18 4 under as a pair

Just one of those things mate - could happen from a scratch golfer or a high handicapper.

I'd be thinking about my next shot tbh. I'd also be saying well played that man to my FC.
