You are playing in a big competition at your club.
You have never played with your playing partner before, but he plays off 17 and starts birdie, eagle.
What would you be thinking as you walked off the second green.
Honestly.

I would say from personal exp that would be the kiss of death. Ive done Birdie, birdie, birdie start and not broken 90 and know a few guys who have done the same. Give me bogie on the first hole every time;)

Jesus, do i need to spell it out?

I knew what you were thinking Pat, I was asking Chris!
;)

To be honest, if I were playing with the club pro and he started birdie, eagle I'd be a bit surprised, but a 17 handicapper starting like that would have me immediately thinking "I'm going to have to watch this one".
But that's just me.
I was trying to find out what other people would be thinking. If my thoughts were a natural or "general" reaction if you like.

I often play with an 18 handicap guy who, one minute can seriously bang a drive like a pro, hit a great iron and can chip and putt pretty well too, but, when he blows up on a hole it's really painful. True he's just come down from 24 to 18 as his good play is stabilising a bit, but I know he could easily start birdie, eagle and blow a round soon after. He's a doctor and, good or bad, he just smiles and enjoys his game, he often says that what he sees every day at work puts a bad game of golf into perspective

My thoughts would be 'well, he is off 17 for a reason' and keep plugging away. The minute you start worrying and thinking about someone else's game is the minute yours falls apart. You just have to do what you can and see what happens. I wouldn't be overly concerned
