Good Morning
I have just joined the forum after taking the game back up after a 15year hiatus.
I was only playing intermittently back the and had a budget set Skymax sx-1, they are still in very good condition but are 20 years old
is it worth sticking with these clubs or picking up secondhand clubs of a similar age (or a bit newer) such as Pings etc ?
I have seen some well known makes on Ebay at very low prices in decent condition which I can justify spending at the moment .
I intend to upgrade should I find myself really getting into it and getting down to something around 90 per round , but tbh any benefit from a club hitting the ball a bit further and more accurately would certainly help.
I am 67 years old and have been getting down the range for the past month a couple of times a week .

Thank you

Gary

Welcome, I've no idea about the clubs but generally I feel if you have some you are better using them for a bit before looking for something else. Club technology has probably improved a bit in 20 years but not so much that old clubs are unplayable.

Welcome.
I'm wondering if your old irons have steel shafts?
You may want to investigate some graphite shafts that can be lighter and more flexible that may suit you.
Maybe a soft regular or senior shaft

Welcome aboard.

I’d stick with your old ones till you feel you’re fully engaged with the game again. It would be pointless to spend money then fall out of love with the game a few months later. That said, if you really want something new, go for it!

Yes, clubs have improved, and the right set will improve your scores. Also, you’re 20 years older and, perhaps, no longer the athlete you were.

If/when you do decide to change go and get some first hand advice, maybe a lesson. If you know someone of similar age with a modern set, maybe try a range session with them and try your 7 iron side by side with theirs…

Carnaptious is a new word to me. I assumed it meant liable to nod off on long road journeys, which was very confusing. Glad I looked it up 😊
"Carnapping" could mean that, but it doesn't. It means stealing a car.

At home, when I was primary school age, my dad would utter the odd word like "carnaptious" and my mother might say some Welsh words. Neither were fluent, but used some words.
Then I might use those words in school and nobody would have a clue what I was saying. I was also picking up some Yorkshire dialect words at the same time. It is a rich language.

Oh dear, off at a tangent again. Sorry @Firestormgjc.

I'm a similar age and my woods and hybrids are 20 years old and my irons are 18 years old.
The only brand new club I might go for next year is a driver. The rest I might upgrade for something 3-5 years old. Those are my thoughts at the moment.
Brand new clubs are a stupid price, mostly.

I've genuinely never heard of Skymax - but I think Hobbit had it right. Keep using them for a couple of months, and by then you may have a clearer idea of what new clubs you actually want. If you try and upgrade now it'll be a shot in a dark. Maybe keep these clubs through the winter and treat yourself when the weather starts brightening up next year.

Here’s the question my pro/coach asked me Christmas time last year after I outlined everything that I thought I needed to do with him the following year.

“What is your main long term objective in golf”. He asked

I told him.

His response was “well for that you don’t need any of what you’ve just told me. All you need to do is to become a bit more consistent at what you already do well, and aim for incremental improvements in what you are less good at. Besides…you are *7 next year not 27”.

Thanks mate.🤣🥰

And so…at 67 what are your short term (given you’ve just picked up the game again) and longer term objectives with your golf. Your longer term objectives could well impact what you aim to achieve in the short term

Great , Thanks

Short term 4-6months Ret my swing etc in a position where my consistency (according to the driving rage app) is at least 75% , hopefully with the practice that will involve is should be able to add a yard or two as well

The Round I am using as a benchmark for my next tester , was a couple of weeks ago and , including penalties was 118, so I reckon eliminating the poor shots , penalties by 50% could get me close to breaking 100
After that , if that is achieved within about half a dozen rounds next spring I may be sufficiently pleased with my self to keep going , then it will be chipping (scuse the pun ) away whilst at the score being able to play with others without being embarrassing.

You’ve said that you are 67. What handicap would you like to have, roughly, when you hit 70. That will tell whether its clubs or lessons you need to invest in in the short term, and if clubs what sort (not brand) - I’m guessing you are not going to need ‘blades’ to meet your 70yr old objective 😉 (me neither btw)

If I could break 90 at 70 years old I would be happy so , 15 - 18 Hcap would be an achievement
