Just entered the County Championship

Fair play for deciding to do it next year. Why not try and get some links practice in ahead of time (costs allowing) and see if it helps. Ideally if you can get a round on Formby Ladies and know the course a bit before playing may help

Fair comment Karen and in fairness my home course ( and a lot around Manchester) are more forgiving.

I have just had another look at the entries for yesterday, 52 players from 22 different clubs, however 28 of them were from just 6 links courses.

Did you enjoy it ?

Do you think it helped you raise your game ?

Yes Phil I did enjoy it, as for raising my game, when I managed to find the fairway with my drive, I generally played the holes well, I managed the wind pretty well, but I wouldn't say I raised my game for it as I always try to play my best and the girl I was playing with was a similar handicap to me. If I had been playing with someone quite a bit lower then that might have had an effect. I always seem to play well when I am drawn with our category one player at our place.

Is that simply not knowing the course properly, nerves or a lack of links experience

Having been told yesterday that it would be at Formby Ladies, I saw on the website today saying it is going to be held at West Lancashire. I will be trying to get some links practice in, but to be honest I am questioning whether I am actually good enough to play in a big links championship. I will see how I play the rest of this season.

What makes you say that? You were good enough to get in. Is it the links layout and the bunkering in particular

Good question, I have played decently in the past on Links courses I have had 30 odd points at Hillside and at Silloth, maybe it was the occasion or maybe it was the first hole yesterday when I drove into a bunker and took 3 to get out that affected me badly. Really don't know the answer.

Put it down in the experience column, see how your game fares in a year's time, maybe get some more links golf under your belt (especially at next year's venue) and go from there. I'd be looking at it as a good achievement and for the most part you know why you posted the odd bad score.

Sounds like you've had a valuable experience, interesting to read some first hand experience of just how different links vs parkland is. Having never played a links course yet it's good to hear about the challenge!
