May have been discussed on the other thread, but think he deserves his own.
Some people may not like him as a person, however as a player that's a different story.
He was a truly great player and servant for Chelsea. Certainly one of the old school who would not fein injury, pull out of a challenge or turn his back on the ball to shield himself. He had tremendous presence on the pitch and was a real leader.
My first memory of seeing Terry was at Newcastle, well before he became a household name and just as he started playing for the first team. Was about 1995/96, I think, and he was up against Shearer in his prime. He stood toe to toe with Shearer and wasn't bullied one bit, he was so strong and probably cancelled Shearer out. I was so impressed his performance and stature was imprinted on my mind thereafter,
So, credit where it's due, he's been a great captain and ambassador to the game for Chelsea

Cam someone tell me when this thread reaches 25 posts?

I bagsie making the 26th post, and if you could all form a guard of owner that would be great...

On the other hand he made his teams mates girlfriend pregnant, parked in disabled spaces in his Bentley, got banned for racially abusing a black player and touted his Wembley box for cash. So swings and roundabouts and all that....

He's been one of the best CB in the premiership that's for sure.

decent enough footballer without being any better for me, sums up how poor the level of centre halfs has been the last 10 years that some want to call him great

as for his other "qualities"......................

Don't think you can deny his footballing talent, his strength, tenacity and his spirit or his leadership qualities on the pitch.

It's his off pitch antics that have let him down and that is why he doesn't deserve a place in the pantheon of great English players.

Basically a thug who you cannot compare to the likes of Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton etc who were both brilliant at their own aspects of the game, but also proper Gentlemen who did not bring the name of the game into disrepute .

Just my opinion

Decent CB who was a good captain for his club - very brave when defending and put his body on the line

But it's all over shadowed for most by everything else - certainly can't ever be called an embassador imo

His off the field stuff - and then his antics at the CL final were embarrassing but he went out exactly how his ego wanted him too - a send off organised by himself that was beyond embarrassing

He is another of those - if he wasn't a footballer he would prob be in jail

Think you have it spot on. As a player on the pitch he was arguably the best in his position in PL history but once you factor in the off pitch antics and it's impossible to actually find a place for him amongst the true greats in the game

In the Scholes/Gerrard/Lampard there are various schools of thought on who was the best, and normally Man U/Liverpool/Chelsea fans side with there own, and the neutrals are spread.

I think in the premiership era, collectively, the vast majority of fans agree that Terry was the best centre half, me included. Rio a close second, then a collection of different ones like Carragher, Adams, Stam etc.

lol a pissed Adams in a different class to Terry

Never really cut it at international level, was there most times England were outclassed by other teams in international tournaments and was a major part of the growing England culture of serious underachievement.

May well of played well in the premier league surrounded with other foreign players to make him look good, but like most England players of the last 2 decades or so, average at best on the international stage.

As good as John Terry was, Adams was a class above.

For me him and rio formed the best English cb pairing I've seen play.

Neither would win popularity competitions. But any fan who wouldn't have taken either in their team in the last 15 years. Is imo saying it out of club bias.

Unfortinately, like quite a few of England's best players of late. He will be remembered for non footballing moments as much as those on the pitch.
