John Terry

On the other hand he made his teams mates girlfriend pregnant, parked in disabled spaces in his Bentley, got banned for racially abusing a black player and touted his Wembley box for cash. So swings and roundabouts and all that....

You forgot the "Do you know who I am?" thing/fight with those bouncers years ago, always came across as a ball end to me after that.
His mother is classy as well so must run in the family :D

How far back are we going? Just the Terry era or further back? Very different answers depending on the timeframe.

Ignoring his unpleasant personality and off field behaviour he has been a top level club player for a decent amount of time. Churlish to say otherwise. Solid, dependable, very English. If he wasn't up to it Chelsea would have sold him on, they are pretty brutal on that front.

Not world class but I reckon only Ashley Cole has that honour over the last 20 years or so.

I must have been watching a different player, as I was not impressed by Ashley Cole. I thought he was too light weight. By the way I'm not just seeing it through my Tottenham eyes because I agree with the sentiments about Tony Adams (Mr Arsenal). Unfortunately our Mr Tottenham (Sol) turned judas, but that's another story......

I think Cole was the best lb in the world for quite sometime. He's the only LB i can recall having kept bith Messi and Ronaldo quiet on multiple occasions. Didn't like his personailty either tbh. But think he was englands best for sometime.

Ashley Cole was class. I think his best years should have been at Chelsea, and maybe they were in terms of what he won.BUT in terms of watching him when when he was off the leash, his best years were at Arsenal for me.

Chelsea probably turned him into a better all round defender, but when at Arsenal he was frightening going forward.

I don't remember Cole ever getting skinned at club or international level and he played against all of the top teams and players on a regular basis. He was also the only English player who regularly performed for his country amongst a whole host of 'star' players, remember that golden generation, who consistently failed to turn up.

Dislikeable off the pitch and can never be forgiven for his wedding outfit, cream suit 😱, but a high quality player.

Sums it up perfectly.

I think at arsenal he was there when they were still one of the leagues genuine contenders and played with attacking flair which he complimented perfectly.

Once at Chelsea and under Mourinho he learned the art of defending.
