i have allways been a fan of the big hitting american, but now i am wondering if he should be getting invites to competitions through his sponsers when there are other golfers who would have worked much harder to reach the same position. i know he has had issues but he isnt a great figure for people to look up to, and i think it is his time to move on

opinions?

Is he any worse than Tiger ?

Having disagreed with you over Nick Faldo I now find myself in complete agreement. Sure John Daly's antics sometimes leave something to be desired but so too do those of Tiger (and some others).

I think he's always been entertaining, even when his golf's been rotten.
Obviously the sponsors find this too.

Humanises the professional game perhaps ?

He's taking up someone else's spot in a tournament. An up and coming player who works his ar$e off to get somewhere but can't get in as there's a pair of Loudmouth trousers to promote.

yeah but so many places are specifically set aside for sponsors picks etc,so in a way he's not taking young up and coming players places at all.

Agreed, it's not totally JD's fault, but when he has a Tin Cup moment and walks off the course, that's a total waste of everyone's time.

and there is no excuse for walking off, what annoys me about that is he's getting paid to be there because of the sponsors and he's in with a shout of earning something from that week.....you'd think that would be enough incentive to calm down and carry on.

Sadly JD can be his own worst enemy... Thought his new lady was keeping him on the straight and narrow but it still seems his inner demons can take control... As has already been said due to his recent 'sillyness' down under don't think he'll get a game there in the foreseeable future...

Daly has done more for golf than anyone actually gives him credit for. When he won the PGA and the Open he made it more accessible to the common man. He made people who had no interest in the game watch it, i remember watching him win the open with my whole family, him crying when Rocca holed that putt, and the lot of us really pulling for the guy to win it.

He also bought his home club, completely renovated it and gave it 5 different tees so that ANYONE could play it from a tour pro to a complete novice as he wanted the game to be for everyone. To add to that he capped the greenfees at $35 to ensure that anyone could afford a round.

I think that's why he deserves a bit of slack. I'd take Daly over Tiger every day

am i right in saying that daly gave money to or still gives money to the daughter or son of the man who was killed by lightning during the pga the year he won it?

Great post Granters. Funny ol' game when we can 'watch' (I use that term loosely) Arnold Palmer chop it round the Masters until he could barely walk and then moan about a guy who still blasts it off the tee

See here,

imagine Tiger, doing that in the first place, and then not claiming publicity for it.

The main thing about Daly is the pure enigma that he is. Would anyone be surprised if he got 4 rounds together and won another major? He's surprised us before! And it's all pure natural talent. He has a 30/30/30 ruke which he abides by-

no more than 30 fags a round
no more than 30 diet cokes a round
don't arrive for a round more than 30 minutes before tee off

It's that Sunday morning hungover attitude that makes us connect to him. When he was younger his dad couldn't afford for him to play golf so all he had was an adults persimmon driver to play with, which was the same size as him. that's how he developed the massive overswing, he literally couldn't stop the club on the back swing because he was so small and that swing won him 2 majors. i think that genius.

At the scottish open in 92 i was waiting on an autograph and he picked me out from the crowd specifically to sign my programme first as i was getting squashed by all the adults . He always cared about the fans, and still does. he's one of us inside the ropes and i think that's the entire appeal
