I wouldn't say a beat cup collects a decent wage anymore. They like most public sector workers have had all benefits quashed along with salary freezes. Secure job I agree with but financially, i dont think you could pay them enough for what nonsense they have to tolerate.

With regards to the OP, I think that the Police Federation are being a bit clumsy with their demands. It seems that they want greater sentences for Police killers as a deterrent for murdering someone who is being paid to protect society. The Police are the ones who put themselves in danger. I wouldn't particularly agree with them. Taking a life should be treated equally, no matter who it is.

Me too, a civilised society can't have the death penalty by definition. Re life meaning life for killing a copper, I think it's seen as a greater crime because it's a crime that directly challenges the authority of the state. However all premeditated murder should carry a full life tariff IMO.
I wouldn't want to see a difference depending on whether it was a cop or not. That seems unfair. What next, a sliding scale if you are an ambulance driver or fireman on a shout. What about if they are off duty. Life should mean life irrespective of what the victim does for a living. None of this minimum term, or a chance for parole after xx years. Once you've killed it's life. Full term until they carry you out in a brown box

I would argue exactly that,.. plus if someone kills a policeman then they probably wouldn't think twice about killing someone who wasn't - they are a killer thru and thru.
Is a policeman's life worth more than anyone else's? Well if the shoe was on the other foot and a policeman's life was worth LESS than a civilian then police would be killed all the time, there would be a huge lack of respect for the law. I don't mind that it 'appears' to be worth more.

I reckon plenty of people would think £26K is a decent wage, make sergeant and you could be on around £40K. Remember to figure (the very lucrative) pension into their earnings as well.

That's taking London into account, yes? Then, you should add up to £6K to that wage for 'London weighting', which I'd imagine balances out a bit. I do agree plenty might not think it decent though.
The pension may not be as lucrative as it used to be, but final salary schemes are like hens teeth and a lot of people would say unaffordable!
Edit: I may have read the link wrong, but does it not say the average wage is £26,500 ? That's not £5K less than £26K.

Add that to the recent changes in terms and conditions that amounted to a pay & pension cut, restrictions on their private lives, shift patterns & the very real risk of injury and I'd say it is a pretty poor remuneration for the job they do and the expectations placed upon them.

Was looking back through the history of capital punishment in the UK
If we still had it in this country
The Guildford 4 , Brumm 6 , Stephen Dowling and Barry George all would have been hung despite being innocent
Prison service does need a reform - it needs to stop being a holiday and life should be life

I was on 55k for a 35 hour week on my last year of driving trains for cross country , had to work every other sunday as well but that was paid as overtime on top of the 55k , they filled my vacancy before i left , no shortage wanting it , work from home now , few hours a week , happy with that , dont miss the high speed stuff and the stressed that went with the job , but i was at the top end of the Train Drivers league

Apologies, I was working on the starting wage outside London (from a few years ago - Don't ask how I know this
). It still amounts to an average wage for working shifts, most weekends and dealing with all the things we wouldn't want to deal with. I don't begrudge a Police Officer a single penny of that wage.Similar threads
