Is this the worst form of Custom Fitting?!?

Following on from the villification of custom fitting by certain quarters, I think I may be committing the ultimate custom fitting sin.

Tomorrow I am going to St Andrews to get retro fitted for the Bridgestone irons I bought from ebay a couple of months ago.

Personally I can't wait, I love the whole custom fit experience. There I've said it!

Don't think that's so daft, Steve. I like my Mizuno MP30 irons but have often wondered if they would benefit from tweaking. Seem quite upright for me. Might do likewise some time.

Steve dont want to put you off butt if i was you i would get your local pro to fit you, i have been there twice and its not worth the money, one of the boys i play with was up there a few weeks ago for a ping fitting, he has written a letter of complaint to ping.

Cheers for the heads up Divot. I'm hoping I get good service. My golf coach knows the head fitter, he coaches the Scottish Ladies Team and they all go there to get fitted. He's had a chat with the fitter regarding my swing, bad shot etc and what he thinks I may need.

I'll post the feedback from the session as soon as I get back, natch!

Steve,

I am not saying divots friend is wrong as every fit session will be different and each person will come away with their own opinion. I know of 4 guys been at the ping centre at St Andrews and cannot say enough good things about it. I think there are a few forum members that have been also. Check back on the posts and you will find some more feedback. The posts should have quite a few replies as they usually turn into a custom/not custom fit argument :)

I got fitted for my previous irons, MP-60's. Didn't get off to the best of starts. The fitter left me to warm up, he disappeared and I shanked almost every iron into the side wall. I was 10 feet away from a 15 foot wide screen and I couldn't hit it!

Needless to say when it came to the actual fitting I was so scared of shanking I didn't put good swings on the clubs, hit the ball like a jessie basically. it definitely affected the fitting, I got light regular shafts when I really need a stiffer shaft, which I have now.

Hopefully I'll be shank free tomorrow!!

sorry divot
ur in the minority ..i`ve seen those lads du the fitting and they r very good at what they du !! one of my mates works there as a fitter and he`s told me that a high % of the poeple going for a fitting would be better off getting a couple of lesson`s before they go ..they think that getting a custom fit will cure there swing faults ...

I think taking existing clubs along for tweaking is 100% fine. I bought a set of 2nd hand Mizunos years ago, (they were on the shelf) and they were fitted bang on.
Unfortunately, 3 lessons later, my hands were lower, the swing was flatter and I was hitting it 10 yards further.
Proved to be a waste of time, couldn't use them, went back to a regular set in a few months.
I'd recommend your course of action a) because you are not buying new clubs and b) the clubs could be re-done should you make any changes.....there's just the cost implication.
I could have gone back and had the Mizunos re-done, but they wouldn't have done it for free.
Don't know what the going rate would be these days, and not all clubs can be tweaked as easily as others.

Personaly, unless I win the titleist fitting, I'll get my lofts and lies done in the spring and leave it at that.

I just feel you would be better getting fit by a pro as he will know more about the swing than a clubfitter, i am sure the guys up there know all about clubfitting but at the end of the day they are only fitting you to the swing you have on that day, glad to hear that they are saying most folk would be better going for lessons before the get fit, i have been saying this on this forum for weeks.

Yeah head fitter and club maker is Norrie if I remember right.

He fitted me and adjusted my old Mx-25's until my new Ping sticks came in. The Mx adjustments were free and I had a great session. Really could not say enough good things about the guy and the service I had!

The only fitting I've ever had was when I was doing best man at my brother's wedding. We went to the shop and this lovely looking assisant lady looked after me very well. She sure knew how to tweek.
I sure would go back for that kind of fitting but as for getting my clubs fitted I won't bother.
There are times when I could do with my balls (pro V's) tweeked

Ive been to ping in gainsborough for a fitting and i can honestly say it was well worth it.The guys who fit you are all qualified in what they do.Ive had plenty of lessons from my local pro and a fitting session was recommended by him as he could not do the same service as a proper custom fitter could offer be it ping titleist or who ever.

The session is totaly free with no obligation to buy a single club and no pressure put on you whatsoever.
These guys are actually taught how to analyse the golf swing and advise you on the clubs that would suit your game.

Ive been to a so called pro at a golf retailer who say they custom fit and paid over £500 for a set of irons and they were totaly wrong for me.
Some golf clubs are recommended fitting centers for various club manufacturers so they will probably have the trackman etc. If not go to the proper place to get fitted as it will only cost you the price of your journey.

And finally yo ucan get your club knocked to any degree you like because all they do is put it into a vice and give it a wack with a mallet.
