Is golf easier for short people?

Do you want me to "keep it simple" or clutter your head with swing talk? :D ;)

The shorter you are the lower the shaft plane of your club, so you're less likely to be too steep, less likely to early extend and less likely to stall and flip the club.

I don't know about becoming a qualified teacher but you are certainly qualified to talk BS. Do you just make it up as you go along in an attempt to sound clever? Why is a shorter person more likely to 'stall' (whatever that means) and flip?

Less likely.

If it's BS then don't read/reply to it

A 6 footer would have legs about 5" longer than mine - he would probably have arms also about 5" (give or take) longer than mine so, in reality, his wrist to ground distance would not be a lot different from mine hence club lengths are rarely longer or shorter than standard by an inch or so.

Surely, it's more of a question of how the taller/shorter golfer stands at address and this would affect the required lie of the club.

Isn't this the thinking behind the Ping custom fitting system?

I'm just providing a public service to the rest of the forum ;)

Thanks for your help but I'd rather make my own mind up and voice my own opinion  :D

I may be way off the mark (not for the first time) but surely the plane of the swing is going to have a big impact and that a tall guy on a flat, one plane type of action may need something longer to get back to the ball than a more upright action

I don't believe club length has anywhere near as much effect on the suitability of golf clubs as lie angle.
Players of different heights (or different wrist to floor measurements) are likely to need different lie angles, but I don't buy the fact that certain players can't hit irons unless they're longer or shorter than standard.

Someone has their clubs 1" longer than standard because they can't hit standard length clubs. Their 7 iron that is now perfect for them is the same length as the 5 iron that they couldn't hit. If they've gone from old clubs to new ones they might even be about the same loft, but one is no good?

I'm not sure Leftie. Wouldn't the guy who is 6ft 2 be 7" taller and 7" longer in the arm and also require standard length clubs?

I'm sure posture must play a part but if you look at the ratio between tall guys that use longer clubs and shorter guys that DON'T use shorter clubs it's a bit 'skewed'. also a short guy isn't going to bend over quite as much if he's using a club with a longer shaft... he'll just have a flatter shaft plane.

I know lots of people that are a little bit taller than me who use longer clubs

I know lots of people that are a LOT shorter... but their clubs aren't.

The Ironic thing i find about this thread is that i know a fair amount of very low handicap golfers..... Their of varying heights and swings and the funny thing is they are all using off the rack stuff that they have been playing for years..... I know one chap in particular that plays to scratch that uses Callaway Razr Black irons straight off the shelf with stiff shafts and midsize grips that he changed himself..... Oh and he's a good 3 inchs smaller than me.....

I guess the irony went right over your head

I was simply putting forward the question that why should height make golf more or less difficult, you buy the equipment that is correct for your stature and posture then get on with it. There have been world class tall players and world class short players. Height isn't really a factor.

Surely though the only way to be 100% sure would be a custom fit and get clubs that are shorter/longer or have the lies +/- adjusted according to stature and plane. Not an ideal solution to the recreational player and those on budgets. I DO agree that a club too long or too short is a hinderance and probably imposes swing faults. I don't see how off the peg you really know if a club suits long term. That said I've bought them and used them. At six feet I guess I am neither a shortie or a longie so perhaps just fit nicely into the off the shelf zone

Genuine club fitting question

I'm 6' 0" and I use standard clubs

I know people 6' 2" who use longer clubs

I know people 6' 4" who use even longer clubs!!

...but I don't know a single person who is 5' 10" that has had their clubs cut down

No it isn't easier.

I aways felt that I could do with my irons being a little longer. about a month ago I had a hit with Karl's mizuno irons that were 3/4 longer. felt really good.

I bought madaideys old mizuno mp33's which are an inch longer than standard. hitting them really well.

I do wish the shorter irons pw,9,8 were maybe only half an inch longer. I feel the longer shaft gets in the way slightly with these irons.

the rest are fine. right down to the 2 iron. its my new weapon.

I must add, im hitting these irons further than any set ive had before. more leverage!

i'm 5 foot 3 and my irons are 1/4 inch shorter and 3 degrees flat.

1/4 inch? you don't find that weird?

It's been said that the best way to play golf is with the flattest possible shaft plane and the flattest lie angle... so you're about perfect! :)

why would it be weird? I'm sure i read that 5 10 was the ideal height for a golfer. being short certainly does help with long iron play. I love my 3 iron, it goes like a rocket.
